As we get into the hotter days, snakes are going to only come out at night and possibly very early morning or late evening hours.

In the more rural areas where venomous snakes like the Copperhead and Timber Rattlesnake are more plentiful, it may be beneficial to always carry a flashlight on your property at night.

As always, shoot me a message for all of your snake needs, venomous or not.

If you’re ever worried about a water snake in your favorite swimming hole, know that they’re more skittish of us than we are of them. When they’re noticed, they’ll ALWAYS flee. Probably some of the more skittish snakes I’ve ever encountered.

They’re usually all around us though. This photo was taken at a very popular fishing lake in St. Louis County. You’d never know he was there.

And here it is folks; The Northern Water Snake.
If you’ve seen a snake in the water, chances are it’s been a Non-Venomous Northern Water Snake. These guys are often confused for the Venomous Cottonmouth and even Copperheads.

Their patterns ARE similar and while you should never go off of one trait to identify a snake, you’ll notice that Copperheads in our area usually have a Hershey kiss pattern whereas the water snake’s Hershey kisses are upside down or even just bands around them.

Because they’re found in bodies of water, they’re also mistaken for cottonmouths. A fun fact is that these guys can flatten their heads to look diamond or triangle shaped so folks will often take that trait and run with it classifying it as a venomous snake.

In reality, the worst thing about these guys is their musk that they use to protect themselves. It smells terrible. They’re flighty snakes and will often scatter when you notice them so even though you may find them in your favorite swimming hole, don’t be concerned because they will flee once they realize they’re sharing it!

Next up in this series; The Northern Cottonmouth.
This snake and the Copperhead are often confused for each other. However, they’re both confused for a nonvenomous snake that is commonly experienced in Missouri which will be revealed tomorrow.

Cottonmouth are a semi-aquatic species meaning you’ll typically find them in or around water. They will feed on just about anything, including roadkill and other snakes. There are many myths surrounding these snakes which include being chased by them, or falling into their “nests” while water skiing.

No snake will chase you, and cottonmouths don’t “nest”.

Cottonmouths can also only strike about 2/3 of their body length.

Pay close attention to their pattern and compare it to the copperhead posted from yesterday.

Stay tuned for the nonvenomous snake they’re often confused for tomorrow!

For the next 3 days I’m going to show you two Venomous snakes and a Non-Venomous snake they’re often mistaken for.

This is the Venomous Eastern Copperhead. I’ve been called to relocate 3 of these guys already this year. This main photo in this graphic, and the page cover photo, are photos of one I relocated from Eureka.

These guys, as with many snakes, are beneficial to rodent control and thus tick control as well. Studies have shown that snakes are significant tick destroyers in eastern forests. When we control tick populations, we control Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease.

Feel free to discuss in the comments or guess what snake they’re often mistaken for.

Stay tuned for more
