Bears Kill Sheep and Chickens in Menominee County
By Richard P. Smith

“We are getting a higher number of calls about problem bears this year than usual,” according to DNR wildlife biologist Joe Sage. Adding, “Most of them are about bears raiding bird feeders or getting in trash cans.”
However, an adult male black bear estimated to weigh at least 300 pounds based on the size of its tracks killed six sheep in mid-May in Menominee County. About a week before the sheep kill, a bear broke into a chicken coop on another farm 2 ½ miles away and killed eight hens and eight guinea fowl.
“I think we caught the chicken killer bear, trapped and relocated,” DNR wildlife biologist Joe Sage said, “but not the sheep killer.” Efforts to live trap the big bear that killed the sheep were unsuccessful.
