Hello chicken folks! In our last couple of installments, we have been focusing on alternative food that can added to current chicken feed. Now we will turn our attention to herbals that should NOT be given to chickens.
Fennel. Who doesn't like fennel? That licorice flavored spice that is sometimes added to homemade sausage links or patties to name a few. It has a fabulous taste! However, we are NOT talking about culinary fennel here. What we are gonna mention is a toxic version called "dog fennel" or like we often say, "hairy dill". Every bit of the plant is toxic and WILL cause fulminant liver failure if ingested. Honestly the stuff stinks too. Maybe that is why some folks cook it up and use it as an insect repellent. We will not endorse the use of any part of the plant period. The only thing it's good for is growing tall so we can have fun mowing it down. It's nasty AND invasive AND toxic to chickens and to your pooches. If the dreaded dog fennel is in your yard, get rid of it! The following is a pic for reference.

Hello everyone!
This past weekend, we expanded our foraging area for our birds. This is the beauty of living in a rural area on many acres; we readily explore the surrounding wilderness looking for neat and interesting plants. In our travels,we came across a nice wild blackberry patch and cattail patch.
As we posted before, chickens love wild blackberries, so it made perfect sense for us to grow a patch for them!
As far as cattails, chickens can eat them too. Not a lot of folks are aware that this lovely plant has tremendous benefits both food wise and ecologically. However, caution must be exercised when harvesting wild cattails. First, they often grow in swampy areas, so, if there is any kind of water pollution, that pollution will be stored in the plant itself.
Second and most importantly ,do research! There are poisonous cattail imposters out there. Our homestead is blessed with plants that have a known history and are 100% safe for our backyard flock.
As with anything, feeding alternative supplements to your chickens is not only cost effective, but they can add a big bang to their daily diet!
Thank you for reading! Enjoy!

Hello folks! Happy chicken Thursday! We are back again with some more common sense feed alternatives that can be implemented in backyard flocks
The two things which I want to address are as follows:
1) Common yarrow
2) Wild blackberry leaves and it's fruit, and wild raspberry leaves and it's fruit

We use common yarrow on our homestead as a stiptic. However it has many other uses as well, especially if its made into tinctures. It is also great for bug stings. However do your research! Before using any herbal on your flock, make sure what your using IS yarrow!

Blackberries and Raspberries grow wild on our homestead. We are blessed that we have copious amounts of them to harvest and eat. We also feed many to our flock as treats. Chickens can eat the leaves as well! So if you have access to any of the above, throw your flock a treat. Sometimes some of the BEST feed is that which mother nature provides.
God Bless!

Happy 4th of July to all our chicken tenders! With summer in full swing, blueberries abound. Here on our homestead, we have countless blueberry bushes. Not only do we harvest the berries for jelly or jam, we feed a fair amount to our birds as well. They absolutely love them!
In the fall when we prune back our bushes, we feed the leaves to the chickens as well. They are a great addition to their feed, and they seem to like them a lot. This is another feed tidbit to help folks amend their chicken feed with a natural homesteading byproduct!
God bless!

Hello chicken folks! Even though this post is not chicken related, we need help. Our sister site listed above has many new puppies that need Furever homes. It is very sad that many puppies are discarded by their owners for a variety of reasons. Fureverfriends is a great rescue and they work hard to re-home discarded dogs. It is heartbreaking. The cost of food and supplies is staggering. We, at the Chick Inn, donate 90% of our eggs to them, so they can be fed to the puppies. Raw eggs? Sure! They are an excellent source of protein, and the eggshells are an excellent source of calcium for growing pups. We never had an issue with salmonella or the like.
Please visit their page and help them help all these little pups. Please share with all your friends as well.
We appreciate all your support.
We have several larger chickens still available. Drop us a line if you have a specific need!
Thank you!

Hello everyone!
This post is designed to elucidate to our patrons just how we arrive at our chick costs and why we price our items for sale the way that we do. We apologize if it is a long read.
First, hatching chickens is not all that it's cracked up to be. There is a LOT of initial costs involved. This may include some, but not all, of the following:
1) commercial incubators. These can run upwards of a $1000.00 or more depending on what your intentions are. DO keep in mind downtime for repair such as electronic boards, fans and heating elements, which can cost well over $200 each to replace.
2) chick feed, laying mash, calcium supplements and the like. Chick feed and mash, is NOT cheap for a 50lb bag. At the Chick inn, we go through a FEW bags a week!
3) Medicines for coccidia( IF NEED be) and worms
4) coop maintenance and repair which Includes wire, metal ties, grates, latches and wood cross pieces. All this costs money folks!
5) miscellaneous herbal remedies for chick wellness( those items that we cant grow ourselves)
6) coop bedding such as bale's of hay. We DONT use wood chips at all as they encourage mold growth if not changed DAILY.
7) water. Yes, water! We go through a LOT of water to maintain our flock.
8) electric. We have dedicated electric to run our brooders and incubators

So, as is illustrated, the costs to hatch and raise birds is substantial. Sure, you can cut corners, but don't expect a good yield.

Now we get to the fun part: our prices. All of the costs above, are taken into consideration, and we come up with a figure that helps us cover our expenses and is somewhat reasonable. There is no way that we can Compete with commercial hatcheries. We do the best that we can with what resources that we have. We are a small business that serves clients locally.

Our prices do NOT include all the love and TLC that goes into raising chicks. There is NO price for that! We depend on our patrons to purchase our wares, so we can grow and In turn, offer more goods and services to you.

So the next time that we quote a specific price per bird, please keep in mind this post. We don't arbitrarily make up prices. Everything is thought out well in advance with customer needs placed first!

We thank each and every person for their support and we ask that everytime a buyer looks at their lovely furry family member, keep in mind all the hard work that went into raising and bringing it into the world.

Thank you again and God bless.

Hello Fellow Chicken tenders
Chick days are still in full swing here at the Chick Inn. We have several 8-10 week old babies and a few 5 week old chicks available. Some of our inventory include:

White leghorn
Rhode Island Red
Easter egger mixes
Buff Orpington
Salmon faverolles
Misc mixed breed chicks

What is a mixed breed chick? Well, to put it simply, it is where two breeds cross and mate. Some folks are funny about that, but the harsh reality is, sometimes mixed breed birds ARE BETTER, because the genetics combine traits of two chickens. For example, white leghorns are cold hardy and great layers whereas other birds might be the opposite. Mixing breeds might enable someone to custom fit a bird to their needs.
We custom cross a lot of breeds at the Chick Inn so it's near impossible to list our inventory. The best bet is to contact us directly.
Thank you for everyone that supports this page and shares it. It is greatly appreciated.

Note: for every NEW chicken purchase (not repeat buyers), we include a dozen free eggs and a small bag of chick food! This is our way to say Thank you!

Due to high demand for light brahma chicks, we will be hatching more and might have them for sale late in the season. Please check with us for availability!

Hello folks!
With warmer weather officially upon us, many folks start their own gardens; whether it be vegetable, flower or herb. At the Chick Inn, we have a small strawberry plot set up for our birds.
Chickens love strawberries, and they are a very healthy treat for them. They are a terrific feed supplement as well. However, do feed them in moderation.
So the next time a backyard garden is in the works, don't forget the feathered kids; make a small area for them. It is the least we can do for them, since they provide us with our eggs for consumption!!!

Thank you for your support and DO remember to share, like and follow our page!

Hello fellow chicken lovers!
How many people like to spoil their birds with treats? We do! Besides feeding them occasional food scraps, we oftentimes make suet cakes. What are suet cakes? They are blocks of bird seed held together via different binding agents in a multitude of shapes. You can hang them where the birds can peck them, or you can just put them in the cage. Buying suet blocks aren't overly expensive, but if you have a bunch of birds like we do, it can add up fast! So, at the Chick Inn, we came up with our own idea of suet binders.

How many people eat pork or steak? Save the hardened white grease. You *can* use bacon grease, but we don't like to do that because bacon has preservatives in it which might not be good for the birds. You can also use RAW, not processed, honey. Raw honey is solid at room temperature. We tried using peanut butter, but our birds are finicky; they don't like peanut butter at all!.

Once a binding agent is chosen, slowly melt it and add in your seeds of choice. This can range from pumpkin seeds to sunflower seeds to most any bread grain to scratch grains. Stir up, put a string in it and let cool. Hang the block and watch them peck to their hearts content!

Good day fellow chicken lovers! We are back again with another informational post with regard to backyard chickens and our beloved naturals. This go around, we want to discuss an interesting variety of an herb that we are ALL familiar with: SAGE. More specifically, lyreleaf sage. We came across this herb on our homestead not too long ago. It is a very varied herbal with many interesting uses. We use it in our pollination beds, but it can also be medicinal
It is a pretty perennial ground cover as well!
However, for the purposes of this post, we are going to focus on chickens! Our birds LOVE this tasty little herb! It offers them a great plant to pick at while foraging on our homestead. In addition, since it is part of the mint family of herbs, it helps with digestive support as do many members of the mint family.

As always, nature provides a LOT of naturally occurring things which are oftentimes right in our own backyard! Finding them and using them properly is the key. We also sell a lot of what we grow so drop us a line if interested in anything specific. Many herbals are season specific, so we might not have everything in stock at any given point in time!

Thanks for reading!

4) Barred Rock
5) Light Brahma
