🚨 Pet Parents, Beware: Cheatgrass (aka fox tails) are a Serious Hazard! 🚨

As summer heats up, so does the risk of cheatgrass — a seemingly harmless w**d that can cause serious injury to your pets. 🌾

👀 Why it's dangerous:
Cheatgrass has sharp, barbed seeds that can burrow into your pet’s:
🔸 Paws
🔸 Ears
🔸 Nose
🔸 Eyes
🔸 Skin

Once embedded, these seeds can travel deeper into the body, leading to infections, abscesses, or even requiring surgery.

⚠️ Signs to watch for:
🐾 Limping or excessive paw licking
👂 Head shaking or ear scratching
😮 Sneezing or nasal discharge
😿 Sudden swelling or pain

✅ Prevention tips:
✔️ Avoid areas with tall, dry grasses
✔️ Check your pet thoroughly after walks
✔️ Keep fur trimmed around paws and ears (you can ask your groomer for a "hunters clip" which will keep the fur short on their legs and paws so they are easier to spot and remove before they start to burrow their way in)
✔️ See your vet if you spot anything unusual

Let’s keep our furry friends safe this season! 🐶🐱💚

Its coming!!! Reminder:
Independence day is coming and can be a scary time for your pet. We see more lost and injured pets around independence day than any other time of year. Pets get scared and escape and they can get lost or even get hit by cars. They also eat things they shouldn't at the family barbeque or get heat stroke during celebrations. Here are our top 10 tips to keep your pup happy and safe this independence day.
1. If your pet gets anxiety during the holiday, NOW is the time to call your vet for anxiety medication. This is a very busy season for veterinary clinics and if you wait too long to call, it may be too late!
2. Do not bring your pet to firework celebrations. Even if they seem calm, they have very sensitive ears. Even if your pup isn't anxious, the loud noise is painful. It can even damage your pet's ears. Your pup would be more comfortable somewhere quiet.
3. Even the most cautious pet owner can have an accident that results in an escaped pet. Make sure all your pup's identification is up to date. Make sure they have an up to date microchip AND updated tags on their collar. It can also be a good idea to make sure they are wearing reflective gear if they are going to be outside at night.
4. Take current photos of each of your pets. If, heaven forbid, they were to escape, a recent photograph can make a big difference in trying to find them.
5. Check and double secure all fences and gates. Think like a dog. Is there any possible way you could get over, under, or through? Avoid letting anxious pets outside during fireworks without a secure leash, even in a fenced yard.
6. Consider creating a "safe space" for your pet with a crate, sound machine, sound dampening, puzzle toys or treats, and their favorite comfort items.
7. Study up on what is safe for your pet and make sure you let any guests know what your pet is and isn't allowed to eat. If there will be small children or others who may not be able to protect your pet from unsafe foods, its best to keep your pet away from the serving and dining areas while food is available.
8. Study up on signs of heat stroke and other effects of heat on pets. Keep a close eye on pets out in the heat. Watch for excessive panting. Make sure they always have ample shade and fresh water. Always test sidewalks and asphalt with the back of your hand before taking your pet for a walk.
9. Your pet may need to spend more time indoors than usual. Plan for your pet to get plenty of daily consistent cardiovascular exercise and enrichment. Plan for time outside when it is cool and quiet, and activities and enrichment indoors during the heat and celebrations.
10. Prepare an emergency veterinary fund and pet first aid kit in case of holiday emergencies.
-Get any prescriptions, over the counter medications, and supplements filled in advance- Don't forget to make sure they are up to date on vaccinations and flea and tick preventatives. We are seeing lots of ticks, even around town this year!
-Consider filling anxiety medication just in case- you may not know your pet get anxious until its too late.
- Have a re**al thermometer available to checking your pets temperature
- Benadryl in case of insect stings (do not give unless directed to do so by your veterinarian)
- Hydrogen peroxide in case of toxin ingestion when you are too far to get to an emergency veterinarian in time (Never give without consulting your vet or ASPCA poison control)
- Antiseptic and salves for cleaning and managing bug bites, burnt paws, or other small abrasions until you can get to a vet if necessary.
- Bandage material to stop bleeding while your get to a vet
- a muzzle (in case your need to move a painful pet in an emergency)
- Safety clippers to shave and evaluate small injuries or abrasions.
- Tweezers, an old plastic bank card, and tape or other tools to safely remove ticks, stingers, and thorns/ spines.
- A list of emergency phone numbers (your family vet, local emergency clinics, ASPCA pet poison control, friends who can help with transport if necessary)
- a list of important information about your pet in case you're every away from home in an emergency. (Pets name, age, sex/alteration status, breed, microchip number, allergies, medical history, and medication list.
Stay safe out there this summer!
