Despite the rainy weather outside, our riders stayed warm and dry while enjoying a special ba****ck riding lesson for horsemanship class this weekend! So thankful for our new heated indoor arena!

There’s something unique about riding without a saddle, it helps riders develop balance, confidence, and a deeper connection with their horse.

We’re about as happy as the horses that it finally feels like summer is on its way! Safe to say everyone at the barn is soaking up the sunshine and enjoying these beautiful days!

At Ethos learning to ride is only part of the journey. Some of the most important moments happen before and after the lesson. It’s the time kids and adults alike spend grooming their horse, learning their personality, and building a partnership based on trust. Our barn is a place where riders become friends, horses become part of the family and every visit teaches us responsibility, patience, and care.

The new property is really starting to feel like home! ❤️🐴

All horses are located in Idaho Falls, ID. Shipping available. Please PM for more info, or call Nadia 208-390-2881. We also have a few not yet listed - so if you are looking for something in particular please reach out!

1. Biscotti. 2016, Trakehner mare, 16.1h.

We can’t believe that this mare hasn’t sold!! ABSOLUTE STEAL for what she is!! Biscotti is an incredibly brave and talented mare with a huge heart and an even bigger jump. Currently jumping around 3ft with scope for more. She is a super jumper that will take a joke and jump anything from anywhere! She would be well suited for someone looking for a competitive jumper or a fantastic eventing partner.
Biscotti has proven herself not only under saddle but also as a broodmare. She is papered and has successfully produced foals in the past, making her a great option for someone interested in breeding as well. Priced in the low five figures, really should be priced higher but owner must sell!!

2. Kona. 2009, Grade QH mare, 15h.

Kona is a lesson horse deluxe! Can teach the little kids to post on the lunge line all the way through to jumping cross rails/2ft. Super easy on the ground, the type of horse that you can let the kids ride bare back and do all the fun things. Does require some maintenance. She would be a great edition to a lesson program or a kid just starting out. Priced high four figures.

“Ducky” is a FANCY, well bred Dutch WB ready for his career. Jumping around a 2’6” course with scope for much more, we see him in the big EQ rings in the future! Working on his lead changes. Super sweet on the ground, as easy as they come. Big puppy dog personality and very trainable and talented. Ready to be produced for big things. Priced mid five figures.

4. Cheeky, 2011 Holsteiner Gelding, 17h.

Cheeky has a long record in the hunters and equitation. He has done everything from long stirrup to junior hunters and Derbys! Brave at the jumps, gets a piece of the hack and beautiful to look at. He is ready to teach his next rider the ropes and help them reach their goals no matter what division that might be! Barn favorite and a good teacher! LEASE ONLY, low/mid five figures for the year.

Let’s Talk About…

Have Expectations in the Horse World Become Unrealistic?

Everyone wants the perfect horse. Safe, forgiving, uncomplicated, brave. Doesn’t spook, doesn’t buck, doesn’t react, doesn’t look at anything! I could go on and on.

But at what point did we stop expecting horses to behave like animals and start expecting them to behave like robots?

Somewhere along the way, the standard for what people consider “safe” has become almost impossible. A horse flicks an ear at something, he’s labeled as distracted. Has one playful buck, he’s dangerous. Spooks at a flower box? Well that’s unacceptable!

The reality is, horses are prey animals. They are living, breathing creatures with feelings. They have insecurities and they get nervous just like we do. Some days they are fresh and others lazy. Yet more and more, it feels like people expect horses to absorb every ounce of nerves, inconsistency, poor timing, lack of confidence and lack of bravery without ever putting a foot wrong themselves. And if the horse does react? Suddenly the horse is the problem.

The truth is, truly “safe” horses are incredibly rare. The horses that quietly tolerate mistakes and pack people around courses whilst forgiving bad distances and still show up every day trying their hearts out are worth their weight in gold. But even those horses are still horses. Horses are not machines. We shouldn’t be expecting them to be emotionless schoolmasters programmed to never look at anything or have an opinion.

And maybe the bigger conversation is this: Have riders lost some of their own responsibility to become braver, better, more understanding horsemen? Because to me, good riding has never been about finding a horse that never reacts. It’s about learning how to ride through the moments when they do. Not every horse is suitable for every rider and not every rider is suitable for every horse. And there’s nothing wrong with admitting that.

Because sometimes the best amateur horse isn’t the quietest one in the barn, it’s the one that teaches the rider to improve instead of expecting the horse to be an emotionless robot and do all the work.

Day 1 at the Boise Horse Show. We have so many riders experiencing their very first horse show this weekend, and we couldn’t be more proud of every single one of them!

There were definitely some highs and some lows, but that’s horse showing - full of learning, growth, and memorable moments. Excited for another day tomorrow!
