Not every “high-strung” horse is a problem… and at the top levels, they usually aren’t. 🐴✨

Many performance horses are naturally more sensitive, reactive, and aware, that’s part of what makes them competitive. However there’s a difference between a horse that’s sharp ✅ and one that’s overwhelmed. 🤯

If your horse:
✨ Struggles to settle
✨ Feels constantly “on edge”
✨ Has a hard time focusing, especially at shows

It may not be a training issue, it may be a nervous system that needs more support. Of course, always rule out the basics first: pain, saddle fit, ulcers, nutrition. When everything checks out, and your horse is still mentally busy, that’s where the right calming support can make a difference.

Getting to the show isn’t just about tacking up, it’s about reading your horse first. 🐴✨

Start on the ground:

• Hand walk the property → let them see jumps, arenas, in-gate, new surroundings
• Give them time to look, process, and settle (don’t rush this)
• Let them stand quietly in the stall if needed, some horses relax better with stillness vs. constant movement

Then assess their energy:
• Calm + relaxed → good to ride as normal
• A little fresh → rideable, just allow extra warm-up time
• High energy + reactive → not safe to get on yet → keep them moving on the ground first

Pay attention to the small signals:
• Tight body, quick movements, distracted mind = they’re not fully settled
• Blowing out, lowering head, licking/chewing = they’re coming back to you

Support them, don’t fight them:
• Small resets like circles, direction changes, or even grazing
• Light stretching or bodywork to release tension
• Liniment, ice boots, or other therapy tools if part of your routine

The goal is to meet them where they are and bring them down thoughtfully. ✨ If your horse tends to get overwhelmed in new environments, having a calming supplement as part of your routine can help take the edge off—so they can focus, not just react. A better ride starts before you ever put your foot in the stirrup.
