4th of July is Fast Approaching!
Fireworks can be exciting for us, but they can be scary for our furry heroes. Here are some simple tips to help keep your dog safe, calm, and comfortable this Independence Day.
πΎ Helpful Calming Aids
β
Calming collar
β
Calming spray
β
Calming treats
β
ThunderShirt (or make your own compression wrap using gauze/bandage wrapβmake sure it's snug, not tight)
β
Ear protection designed for dogs to help reduce loud noises
β
Play soft jazz or calming music to help mask the sound of fireworks
π‘ Create a Safe Space If you have a basement, that's often the perfect place for your furry hero during fireworks. If not, choose a quiet interior room where your dog feels safe and secure.
π Turn Loud Booms into Good Things If you're home with your dog:
Have plenty of high-value treats ready (something they don't normally get!).
Every time there's a loud boom and your dog stays calm or doesn't bark, immediately reward them with a treat and lots of praise. This helps build positive associations with the noise.
π« Never Leave Your Dog Outside During Fireworks Many dogs panic and can escape even the most secure fences. When it's time for a potty break, always go outside with them and keep them on a leash if possible.
π§Ή Don't Forget the Next Day Before letting your dog out to play or potty, walk through your backyard, fenced yard, or potty area to check for leftover fireworks debris. Curious dogs may try to eat it, which can make them very sick.
β€οΈ From Happy Heroes Dog Training A little preparation can make a huge difference for your dog's comfort and safety. Have a safe, fun, and stress-free 4th of July with your furry hero!
