Why do I train? It's a good question for us to ask.

From childhood, dogs were an integral part of my life.

As a child, I learned from my dogs that love can come with no agenda or harm.

They taught me as an adolescent to soften my approach and to communicate intentionally, taking time to adjust to feedback and catch nonverbal cues.

As an adult, my dogs showed me I can evolve. Old ways aren't always best nor are they an excuse for resisting change or wallowing in the past.

I owe much to the dogs of my life who judged little and loved much even in the hardest times. And I continue to train because of the legacy they have given me.

Elsa the leonberger came in for sessions to work on all things puppy with us. She isn't even 6 months and is bigger than most adult dogs! She will only get bigger; so silly puppy behaviors left unchecked can turn dangerous quite quickly as she matures.

She has an owner willing to be patient and consistent with her training. And it has shown in each session. Miss Elsa even helped host a preschool party with stellar feedback from her houseguests this weekend!

Give grace to the puppies.

Too many handlers go hard on young dogs. They see their puppy's mature counterparts and aspire to get there quickly. As if getting their faster somehow proves we're better?

But we lose sight of the literal babies at our feet. This is all new to them.

And we shape the lense through which they will take in their world for the rest of their lives. So don't be so harsh, so rushed, so impatient.

Give grace to the puppies. For one day too soon, they will be our dogs.

Reputable trainers embrace the evolution in their field.

If you can't entertain challenging dialogue without degrading another trainer... then maybe you are the problem in this industry.

Feedback isn't a threat, it's information to either proof or reevaluate your methods. Welcome it.

How I train now is vastly different than the methods I began with as a junior handler. And is even different than how I trained a couple years ago. It is amazing what the world of dog training continues to learn!

I will not sit in company that degrades others in our field. It will change no one. And it will only affiliate you with and contribute to the furthering of a toxic environment that will have you next in line for degradation.

Learn when to listen. Learn when to change.

And learn when it's time to just shut up and focus on training the amazing dogs in front of you.
