When life gives you high winds, fly a kite🪁 or a feed bag, whatever’s available 🤷🏼♀️

I’m not saying go grab your fresh overly sensitive horse on the windiest day and tie a bunch of noisy flying feed bags and things to them right away. I am saying.. walk around with them, lead the horse with them in hand, work the horse around them, lunge them over them, let them come to the conclusion they’re not a big deal before you tie one on, and then two or three and so on. Don’t blow up their comfort zone, EXPAND it. Slowly, as you would if they were telling you in words that they were uncomfortable . The better you listen 👂🏼 the better they trust you when you bring them into new seemingly scary situations in the future. Take this mare for example. She was super flighty a hundred new situations ago, lol. When I walked out with these feed bags, for the first time, she was alert and initially leaned away slightly, but quickly switched over to her thinking side and stood up straight letting me rub her with them like we’ve done it before. She knows In all the situations I’ve exposed her to so far, nothings ever hurt her and everything’s always turned out to be a good experience.
Alternatively, you could take a sensitive flight animal, carefully attach a bunch of stuff to them and let them run around until they maybe eventually stop because they can’t get away, or potentially attempt to jump your fence causing damages or possibly hurt themselves, learning nothing and losing their trust.
Honestly, I originally just wanted to post these pictures because I think Vegas is glowing up beautifully, but now I want to challenge you to listen to your horses better. Not just while you’re working on something specific you had in mind for the day. Today make that “thing”, yourself. When you go to catch them what are they telling you? When you’re leading them one place to another, are you paying attention? When they are unsure how do you respond, and would it be more assuring to you in an uncomfortable situation if someone responded to you the same way? 💭
