If your department insists on sending you to a handler course that is only a few weeks to “speed things up”, do your homework and educate your command staff.
1st
Check out the background of who will be teaching you. Have they handled a dog in the same capacity that you will be? I have great respect for military handlers but let’s be honest, it is not the same job.
2nd
The class of just a few weeks is a recipe for disaster. The entity teaching this class obviously doesn’t care about your safety, your dog’s safety or the amount of liability that is going to be thrust upon you in a split second decision.
3rd
The class should be taught in “baby steps”. The dog and handler are strangers meeting for the first time. The bond and trust takes several weeks. Short-cuts equals failure.
With that being said, we are holding our first 9 week handler course of the year beginning February 5th. K9Officers.org has reserved some spots. I only do classes of no more than 6 handlers, but I have a few spots left if interested.
