There are so many posts being spread all over social media about what your pet can and can not have from Thanksgiving. Please refrain from feeding your pets from the table. It is a bad habit your pet is learning that it is OK to eat from the table while you're eating, and it is not good for pets to eat food that they are not used to eating. We see so many pancreatitis patients, and it is a painful condition for your pet. Please let them enjoy their own food while you enjoy your food!

Please note that our office will be closed on Thursday, the 27th, and Friday, the 28th. Ensure you have sufficient food and medications to last throughout the holiday week, including any online pharmacy orders. Due to Black Friday shopping, shipping delays may occur, so plan accordingly. Additionally, be cautious of pets consuming food they shouldn't during the holidays. Refrain from feeding them from the human table to avoid potential health issues. We care about our patients and prefer they spend the holidays comfortably at home rather than in the hospital with gastrointestinal upset.

Rabies Vaccine FAQ for Pet Owners

1. Why does my pet need a rabies vaccine?

Rabies is a deadly virus that affects the brain and nervous system. It can infect any mammal—including people. Vaccination is the best and only reliable way to protect your pet and your family.

---

2. Is the rabies vaccine required by law?

Yes. In nearly all states (including West Virginia), dogs and cats are legally required to stay up-to-date on their rabies vaccination. Clinics cannot legally treat or board an unvaccinated pet without providing a rabies shot at the visit.

---

3. How often does my pet need the rabies vaccine?

Most pets get their first vaccine at 12–16 weeks old.
After that:

1-year booster, then

Every 1 or 3 years, depending on the vaccine used and local laws.

---

4. My pet stays indoors. Do they still need the rabies vaccine?

Yes! Indoor pets can be exposed:

A bat can enter the home, especially in Appalachia.

Pets can slip outside or come into contact with wildlife unexpectedly.

If your pet bites someone—even accidentally—the law requires proof of a current rabies vaccine.

---

5. What are the symptoms of rabies?

Early symptoms may include:

Behavior changes

Fever

Difficulty swallowing

Excessive drooling
As it progresses, pets may show aggression, paralysis, or seizures. Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear.

---

6. Is the vaccine safe?

Yes. Rabies vaccines are very safe, with only mild side effects in some pets, such as soreness at the injection site or slight tiredness for a day.

---

7. What happens if my pet is not vaccinated and gets exposed to a wild animal?

The law requires strict steps, which may include:

A long quarantine

Immediate vaccination

In some cases, euthanasia (if exposure is confirmed and vaccine history is missing)

Staying up to date prevents these risks.

---

8. How much does the rabies vaccine cost?

Prices vary by clinic, but it’s one of the most affordable and important vaccines your pet will ever get. It’s far cheaper than emergency treatment or exposure protocols.

---

9. Can my pet get rabies from the vaccine?

No. Rabies vaccines do not contain live rabies virus and cannot cause rabies.

---

10. When should I schedule a rabies vaccine?

As soon as possible—especially if your pet is overdue.
If you’re not sure, call the clinic or go onto our app PetDesk and you can check to see if your pet is current on their vaccination history.

Like to thank you for the donations we have received. There is plenty of time to donate still. We have some people who are in need of a few items for their dogs and cats. Along with food, some have requested treats, dog sweaters, and cat litter. A very nice lady has unfortunately lost her home in a fire and she has requested her dog could really use some supplies. Let's pay this forward to her and her puppy and all the others who are needing some assistance. We appreciate it so much.
