*I want to stress again this was not my first session desensitizing Louie to equipment, and that I would never start counterconditioning this aggressively with a dog with a bite history for the first time. This is something that needs to be worked up to, and if you are dealing with a dog that is seriously reactive to being handled you should seek professional help*

Clarity is the secret sauce.

What I was so proud of in this seemingly simple training moment was the clarity of instructions Chloe was given by her owner.

Notice, the only verbal input Chloe is getting is her release cue, and her place command. There is no “c’mon Chloe let’s go to your place”, “no stay, stay Chloe, stay”, etc.

So often we fall into the trap of speaking to our dogs as if they know English—they dont.
