Exciting news: Hershire has added another awesome doctor to our team to allow us to continue to provide prompt and compassionate care to our patients. Please help us welcome Dr. Hannah Bowman. Dr. Bowman grew up in Palmyra and shadowed and trained with Dr. Myers throughout her veterinary school training. We are excited to have Dr. Bowman return to Hershire!🐕🐈

Some dogs love summertime and basking in the hot sun, while others prefer to stay in the air conditioning… can anyone guess which type Panda is? 🤔😉

Speaking of hot ☀️ — the next couple days are almost 90 degrees! Great time to remind everyone to keep your dogs safe in the heat. Here’s some easy tips to remember:
-Always provide access to fresh, cool water at all times
-If your dog is outdoors, provide shade from direct sunlight. Avoid leaving dogs in garages or sheds as they can quickly overheat.
-Avoid hot surfaces! Check the temperature of pavement or concrete BEFORE walking your dog as it can burn their paws. Hold your hand on the surface for 7 seconds and rule of paw is: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your hound!
-Limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day and exercise in cooler times instead, like early morning or later evening.
-Never ever leave your dog in a parked car, even with the windows cracked a car can quickly overheat and rise to temperatures well above 100 degrees.
-Know the signs of a heatstroke so you can be aware of the symptoms like heavy panting, dark red gums, rapid pulse, unsteadiness, or vomiting.

It’s important to remember that coming to the vet tends to increase adrenaline, anxiety, and can even change normal behaviors and reactions for otherwise friendly dogs in other environments. After a minor incident this morning, we feel it’s important to remind everyone that while it’s nice to let dogs see each other in passing in our lobby or outside on the way to the car, it is best to keep leashes tight and to not allow them to actually touch or make nose-to-nose contact. When adrenaline is high, it is very hard to predict the reactions of animals and situations can escalate very quickly in small spaces. Even though your canine friends may be friendly to other dogs on walks or at home does not always mean the reactions are the same in a different environment where they are not comfortableble: like the vet. In addition, just like going to your doctor, patients can be coming here for all different sicknesses and could be exhibiting signs or have had contact with other dogs that are exhibiting signs of contagious illnesses — you never know their full history (that’s our job). It’s always best to be cautious! 🐾❤️

We just want to do everything we can to avoid “barkuments” and keep all the tails safe and wagging while they are here! ☺️

Sent into the weekend by one of our favorite guys as our last appointment of the day. What says “Happy Friday” better than a dapper Golden Retriever face like THIS one? 🥰

Plus, he put on a tie for the occasion. We love Cooper ❤️

This is Rio!
Rio came in for an abdominal exploratory surgery because he was vomiting and not eating. His x-rays and ultrasound showed that he had something stuck in his duodenum (small intestine). We took him to surgery and found the problem: A pacifier swallowed whole!
Rio is recovering at home and doing great. 🫶🏽

Now if only they could tell us why they decide to eat things…. 🤔

Happy Veterinary Receptionist Appreciation Week! 🐾

We truly appreciate our front desk staff every week of the year because their position can be the hardest and most important one. Without them, the entire hospital would fall apart. To our amazing reception team: Thank you for all that you put up with from us here! You’re an amazing group! We definitely couldn’t do it without you! 😬❤️

If you’re stopping in to see us, please take a moment to wish the girls at the front desk an especially happy week! ☺️

Meet sweet “Bitzy”: she is a 12 year-old poodle mix that came to Hershire for an emergency pyometra surgery. A pyometra is a serious and life-threatening infection in the uterus of unspayed dogs.
Luckily, Bitzy did great for surgery and is recovering at home with her family.

Her infected uterus was 1/4 of her entire body weight! 😳

Meet Jack Frost!
He is a young adult male cat at Hershire that we would love to find a great home. He is neutered, now microchipped, has all of his vaccines, and tested negative for FELV/FIV. This handsome boy walked right up to Dr. Myers’ window at her house just before the snow storm, and must have known she was the right person to pick to save him just in time from this bitter cold!

He is absolutely as friendly as it gets, and has excellent litter box manners! We feel he would do well in any home, as long as the proper introductions are made. Please message us here or call in if you are seriously interested. 🩶
