⚠️These are unsafe temps for YOU and your pets!

🔆Get them for their walks this morning before the air and the pavement become too hot.
🔆Please leave them at home as you get your errands completed and make sure you are providing them with plenty of fresh water.

Thank you for doing your part to keep the pets in our community safe!

Very, hot think of your pets provide extra fresh water and shade. A dog house only can be a hot box retaining and magnifying heat. Kiddy pools filled with fresh water can provide a place for your dog to cool off. I have seen them at Dollar General and I believe Flatlanders has them too.

It will be a hot afternoon across southwest Kansas. Afternoon Heat Index of 100 to 104 possible. Be prepared for the heat and practice heat safety wherever you are.

… Update…We believe all the little male chihuahuas have rescue tags pending …🐾 the bigger black female is still currently available for rescue or adoption…

Meet the lovable dogs at Hugoton Animal Shelter! They've already received their first Parvo Distemper and Kennel cough vaccinations, and have been treated for worms with pyrantal. The adorable little chihuahuas are all males, while the stunning black dog is a female. The good news is that the hold time is off for all, making them available for rescue or adoption - except for the two in the photo of the black & tan chi and tan chi, who will be available on Tuesday. Get ready to welcome a new furry friend into your life!

We are two weeks away from the busiest week of the year for Animal Control and animal shelters across the United States! 🐾🇺🇸

🐕🐱The lost pet rate increases roughly 30% between July 4-6.

🔖Please be sure that your pets are wearing collars with SOME form of identification, not just the week of the fourth but everyday! (a rabies tag, an ID tag, a city tag, or just a piece of duct tape with your address & phone number!) This helps us return your pets in a timely manner!

🎆Bring your pets inside! Fireworks are extremely scary for animals. The bright flashes and loud noise can send animals into flight mode. Even pets in fenced yards may panic enough to escape.

🩺If your pet needs medication to help calm them, talk to your veterinarian. Now is the time to schedule that appointment, not the day before.

🔎If your pet gets lost contact Animal Control and report your missing pet and post on social media.

📞 If you find a lost pet in town, please contact Animal Control and turn it in. The Animal Control Officer is familiar with our towns pets and has the ability to check them for a microchip. The animal shelter is the central hub where residents routinely check for their missing pets—it’s the best way to help reunite them quickly and safely.

As you gear up to celebrate, keep your pets safe, calm, and comfortable—so everyone can enjoy the holiday!

New boy dogs at the shelter. Picked up on the 13th. If these are your cuties or you know where they belong please call Hugoton Police Department at 620-544-2020 to make an appointment to claim. These cuties will be available for adoption or rescue on 6/19/25 if not claimed by owner.

…UPDATE… I have had several private responses to this post… So far no owner has been found or known but various members of our community are feeding him and some have even provided vet care and have been administering eyedrops for this kitty. It is heartwarming that our community is being proactive and caring for a sweet older cat that is on the street thru no fault of his own. Thank you Hugoton peeps for caring for the innocent. I wish we had a TNR program this boy would benifit from a good neuter. His scuffs are consistent with those incurrred by intact male cats fighting. Thank you for caring and acting.❤️😽
