Oh, Hondo needs a home!

Meet Hondo. He’s blind. He’s lumpy. He’s got one eye that points to heaven and one that quit the job entirely. His tail? It wags like it’s trying to send a Morse code SOS. Honestly, we’re not sure what kind of dog he is - possibly a cross between a piglet, a loaf of bread, and your uncle's old recliner.

But listen. Hondo is PURE LOVE in a slightly crumpled wrapper. He navigates life by smell, snuggles like it’s his full-time job, and snorts like a tiny pig when he’s excited (which is often).

He may not win Best in Show, but he will win your weird little heart. But in all seriousness, Hondo is the PERFECT boy. He loves kids, other dogs, and is potty and crate trained. He’s a diamond in the “ruff”, and ready to change your life.

🎂 August 1st is DOGust 1st—the universal birthday of shelter dogs! 🐾

🐾 Waggin’ Wednesday: Meet Sprout! 🐾
This little guy is ready for a fresh start—and a warm lap to curl up on.

Sprout is a 3-year-old, 10 lb pup arriving from Alabama on 8/2 and looking for a foster home (and ultimately, a forever one!) through Fluffy Dog Wellness & Rescue

He may be a little shy at first, but with a bit of love and stability, Sprout’s sure to blossom. 🌱

Thinking about fostering? It's a beautiful way to change a dog’s life—and yours.

☀️ The hottest days of summer are still upon us.

Even at just 78°, a parked car can reach 120° in 30 minutes—cracked windows won’t protect your pup.

If you're running errands, leave them at home where it’s safe and cool.
And if you see something, say something—you could save a life. 🐾💛

🐾 Do You Know the Signs of Stress in Your Dog?

Dogs can’t always tell us when something feels off—but their body language can.

Watch for subtle signs like:
🫢 Yawning (when they’re not tired)
👅 Tongue flicks
😰 Dry panting
🐽 Frantic sniffing
🚫 Refusing to move forward
🙈 Deliberately avoiding triggers

If your pup seems overwhelmed, slow things down. Give them space, time, and reassurance.

At DGI, we believe protecting your pet includes more than just vet bills—it’s about understanding them, too.

Meet Sarah!
This gorgeous girl has been through a lot—once a stray, then adopted, and sadly surrendered when her family moved. But don’t let her past fool you—Sarah’s heart is full of love and loyalty for the people she trusts. ❤
✨ High-energy & would make an amazing running buddy
✨ Fully potty trained & kennel trained (but prefers the bed!)
✨ A total sweetheart once she warms up
✨ Great with other dogs (but needs slow intros)
✨ A champion car rider (don’t forget the pup cup!)
👁️ Has a unique enlarged eye due to a deformity, but no pain or concern—just extra character!

She’s best suited for a home with older kids and confident, playful dogs who enjoy some rough-and-tumble fun.

Passing along Dogs Disclosed post. Is your dog aggressive or reactive??

IS YOUR DOG AGGRESSIVE OR REACTIVE?

Reactivity can certainly look like aggression. Lunging, barking, snarling, growling are just some of the behaviours we might see that may make us think our dogs are aggressive.

I believe that too many dogs are labelled as aggressive. Yes, there certainly are some dogs that are truly aggressive and genetics play a big role in this, but this is not what this post is about.

This is about just labelling a dog as aggressive and not looking at what emotion lies beneath the surface that may be causing the behaviour.

Fear, anxiety, stress, frustration, over arousal, negative experiences, learning history, trigger stacking, pain etc. can all cause an overreaction or an abnormal level of arousal in response to whatever is triggering that particular dog.

Although reactivity and true aggression are inherently different, a reactive dog may become an aggressive dog if the underlying emotion isn’t recognised and the triggers aren’t addressed. The behaviour becomes an automatic response or a learnt behaviour. The dog has learnt that aggression works to make the “thing” go away.

Reactivity and what is triggering it needs to be understood and addressed through either careful counter conditioning, desensitization and sometimes just managing the environment to prevent the behaviour from being practiced.

Our words and our labels matter – they influence our state of mind and our thoughts.

Rather than saying "My dog is aggressive", try saying "I have a dog that over reacts to certain triggers or certain situations and we are working on ways to improve this"

🐾 Traveling with Your Dog This Summer? Read This First!
Summer is the perfect time for adventures with your pup—whether it’s a weekend at your favorite campsite or a cross-country road trip. 🐶☀️

But if it’s your first time traveling with your dog, planning ahead is key. Here are 5 tips to help you and your furry friend have a safe, stress-free journey:

1. Microchip your dog.
Dogs are unpredictable, especially in unfamiliar places. A microchip is your best chance at reuniting if they get lost. 🐾

2. Pack the essentials (and extras!).
Collar, leash, ID tags, food, bowls, meds, vet records, toys, blankets, and a pet first aid kit. Don’t forget towels and waste bags!

3. Get pet insurance.
Emergencies happen—especially far from home. Pet insurance helps cover unexpected vet bills so you can focus on your pup, not the price tag. 🏥💡

4. Plan your route wisely.
Double-check that your hotel or Airbnb is pet-friendly, and map out nearby emergency vets in case you need one.

5. Take plenty of breaks.
Your dog needs time to stretch, potty, and play! A calm dog = a happier trip for everyone.

✈️ Wherever you're headed, a little preparation goes a long way. And if you're not covered yet—let’s talk.

Because your dog deserves to be protected, wherever the trail leads.
