A letter to my first herding partner:

Thank you.

Thank you for coming on this journey with me.

Thank you for dealing with all my shortcomings, miscommunications and impossible standards when I began learning this complex world of herding.

Without you, I would not be where I am today. It’s hard knowing I have surpassed you and you may stay frozen in time, struggling to level up with me because of all the unclear information you got from me when I didn’t know any better.

But you don’t know that. You still happily help me any time I ask. You do the best you can with the information you have been given and muddle through the uncertainty and difficulties that follow along with being a first dog.

In obedience, you would be called my "Novice A dog". I am not sure that herding has a term for your first dog, but you deserve a LOT of credit and recognition. I stepped into the herding arena for YOU. I had no idea at the time, that its what I needed just as much as you.

Signed,
A slightly less novice handler, with a lot left to learn

I call this clip, "What's the plan, boss?"

If you look beyond them, you will see 3 lambs in the corner of the arena.

I walked into the arena and all 4 of these dogs, who ALL want to work REALLY bad, stopped on their own and waited for my instruction on what we were doing.

This may not seem like a big deal but, I promise, it takes a lot to achieve this kind of relationship and I am so proud of what we have accomplished in that.

You know you are really getting deep in the learning process of something when small moments like this resonate with you.

I was going to just take a picture but thought a video showing how still Sage and Steel (on the right) stayed was pretty cool to watch 👀

Every year I look forward to lambing and forget this part... 🤦‍♀️🙉🎧

P.s. guess which one was a bottle lamb? 🤣

We are headed home from Purina Farms with 2 new titles, 2 Reserve High in Trials and many lessons learned (that's the important part!).

So proud of Steel, Storm, and Kit for all their hard work for me this weekend.

Thanks to the Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA for welcoming us at their national, as well!

Kit says, "I herd this was the started level handler's post. If I lay here, can we get STARTED?!"

(see what she did there? Trust me, it's a play on words because border collies definitely understand puns and homophones🤣)

We have some coming in from the Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America's National Specialty Herding trial!

Percy's owner came to us a couple months ago after taking a year off from herding and asked us to help them get ready for this year's National.

Percy earned 2 Qualifying scores at the Started Level on A course sheep, congratulations Team Percy!

Everyone takes their sheep for a walk on Saturday morning, right? 🤣

Okay, truth be told, they were on their way to the grazing area for the day.

Dory wishes all her Cardigan Welsh Corgi friends good luck at the National this weekend (but most of all, have FUN with your dog!)

We aren't going this year, but look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
