How Often Should My Horse Have a Dental Exam?

Did you know that horses’ teeth grow continuously throughout their lives? Without regular dental care, sharp points, uneven wear, or painful issues like ulcers and loose teeth can develop.

🔹 Young horses (2-5 years) – Frequent checks as teeth are erupting and changing
🔹 Adult horses (5-20 years) – Annual exams to maintain balance and prevent discomfort
🔹 Senior horses (20+ years) – More frequent exams as teeth wear down and may require extra care

Signs of dental problems include dropping feed, weight loss, head tossing, and resisting the bit. Regular dental care keeps your horse comfortable, improves digestion, and enhances performance!

Dystocia—difficult or prolonged labor—is a serious medical emergency that can put both the mother and her babies at risk. While some animals give birth without complications, others may struggle due to large litter size, fetal positioning, or underlying health issues.

🚨 Signs of Dystocia to Watch For:
🔴 Straining for over 30 minutes with no progress
🔴 More than 2 hours between deliveries
🔴 Weak contractions or complete lack of labor
🔴 Visible distress, pain, or extreme exhaustion
🔴 Green or foul-smelling discharge before birth

If your pet or livestock is experiencing labor difficulties, don’t wait—seek veterinary care immediately! Our team is equipped to provide emergency interventions, medical support, and C-sections when needed to ensure the safety of both mother and babies.

💙 Be prepared—know the signs of dystocia and have a plan in place. Contact us if you have concerns about your animal’s pregnancy or delivery.

Our Story

Hoxie Veterinary Service P.A. is proud to serve the Hoxie, KS and surrounding areas for everything production and companion animal related. Drs. Derek Pridey, Brandi Taul and Gina VanLoenen serve as Hoxie Veterinary Service’s licensed, experienced veterinarians. As a team, our goal is to treat our clients like family and care for our client’s pets and livestock as if they are our own. All of our clients and patients will be treated with respect, dignity and compassion at all times. Our team mission and sole purpose is to be of excellent service to our clients and patients, as they are the reason we are here.

Hoxie Veterinary Service, P.A. takes pride in all that we do for our clients and community as a whole. Our team is dedicated to providing the best customer service and veterinary patient care there is to offer. Our practice has a strong emphasis on large animal (mostly beef cattle) medicine, but the small animal and equine side of the practice is also busy and growing. As a mixed animal practice, we strive to provide rural America with excellent veterinary service through the use of modern technology such as onsite digital radiography, blood work and ultrasound machines. We also have two hydraulic cattle chutes, one a tilt-over for lameness/footwork on site and a new portable chute for work in the country compatible with cattle of all sizes.

As of March 2019, HVS is under the sole ownership of Dr. Derek Pridey. Dr. Pridey is originally from Leoti, KS and graduated veterinary school in 2006 from Oklahoma State University. Along with his wife, Cheryl and children, Chelidy, Jed, Viley and Silas, are proud to be part of the Hoxie community.
