Over the last six years, one of the biggest things I’ve learned is that understanding behavior never really stops.

The more dogs I work with, the more I find myself paying attention to the little things and asking, “Why did that happen?”

So I decided to start documenting some of those moments.

Today’s one was simple.

I wanted to take the next step with Spark and Clue, so I left them in a stay, drove down the road to the gas station, and left my phone behind to record what happened.

It’s a small moment, but I think training is built on small moments like these.

Fireworks are beautiful for us—but they can be terrifying for our dogs.

Fear of loud noises isn’t something dogs have to live with forever. By addressing the underlying causes and building confidence through structured training, many dogs can learn to stay calm when the fireworks begin.

Most dogs can swim.

But many don’t know how to get out of a swimming pool.

When dogs panic, they often swim laps around the edge looking for a way out, becoming more exhausted with every pass.

One of the simplest things you can teach your dog is how to find the pool steps or how to climb the edge. Spend a few minutes guiding them to the exit over and over until it becomes automatic.

It only takes a few minutes to teach…
…and it could save their life one day.

This puppy has a special place in my heart.

I bred her, helped raise her from the day she was born, and now at 10 months old we’re continuing to build the foundation that will carry her through the rest of her life.

What you’re seeing in this video isn’t complicated. It’s a dog learning to communicate, follow guidance, work through pressure, and stay engaged with her handler. These are the small building blocks that eventually become reliability.

One of my favorite parts in this video is that kids are involved in the process too. Dogs don’t just learn from trainers… they learn from the people around them every day. When training becomes part of life instead of something that only happens during a lesson, dogs tend to progress much faster.

People often look at a well-trained dog and wonder how they got there. The answer is usually thousands of small moments like these. Consistency. Communication. Patience. Repetition.

Nothing fancy. Just good training.

Let me tell you about this lovely lady.

She came to me a few years back for a rehabilitation. The family had moved from an 11 acre farm to a house in memorial. Needless to say the Livestock Guardian Dog at 4 years old was having a hard time with the transition.

So we spent 7 weeks introducing her to city life. Showing her that although her space was significantly smaller that there was a way to cope with the change. Her family was very dedicated to helping her be feel more secure.

Fast forward and here we are years later. This is my yearly visit with Merengue while her family visits Korea for almost 2 months.

I’ve watched her age and I love her so much.
