Killdeers have returned to the Skyfarm! 🐦

We have been patiently awaiting the first Killdeer babies of the season to hatch and they are finally here.

Their guardians are both staying nearby and calling out to the babies to let them know they are safe here. Soon enough they'll be running around, growing, learning, and living off the offerings of our Skyfarm.

In the middle of central Houston, surrounded by concrete, traffic, and development, these small moments matter deeply. As Houston continues to grow, urban ecological spaces become increasingly important. Every patch of native planting, every source of water, every healthy soil system creates refuge.

Seeing Killdeer choose the Skyfarm as a nesting site reminds us that when we build ecosystems instead of landscapes, life is better for everyone - not only for people, but for the wildlife that has always called this region home.

Open Farm Day ⛅

This week's lesson : Tomatoes 🍅

As the weather shifts towards steady warmer days, we are welcoming the start of tomato season in Houston this week at the Blackwood Skyfarm. Join us as we discuss how to care for tomato plants, guidance in picking the right varieties for your gardening space, and companion planting to address pest concerns and ensure pollination!

Open Farm Days are open to participants of all skill levels. From experienced community gardeners to beginners, there is space for everyone to learn and participate.

Open Farm Days:

After a few rainy Wednesdays in a row we're excited to announce that Open Farm Days are BACK at the Blackwood Skyfarm 🌞

Over the next few weeks we'll be exploring and learning from some of our Summer essentials: onions, tomatoes, and sunflowers!

Open Farm Days are open to participants of all skill levels. From experienced community gardeners to beginners, there is space for everyone to learn and participate.

Open Farm Days:

Houston weather - great for the plants, but not always for the plans.

It's looking like we're in for another wet Wednesday this week, which means we will once again be postponing our usual Open Farm Day class 🌦️

Keep an eye on the sky and here on our Instagram for updates about next week's class. In the meantime, check out some of the other ways you can get involved with the Skyfarm! We always need volunteers to help us dig into what we're doing, and we love hosting groups and classes here at the largest elevated farm in Texas.

Tonights Open Farm lesson on Orka is being postponed due to a scheduling conflict. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We do have some good news though! Next week we're having an extra long Open Farm experience during our Earth Day celebration on April 22nd. 🌎❤️ Join us for tours of the farm, special crafts and activities, and of course, a chance to dig into the soil with our agroecologist during Open Farm from 3-6pm.

This week’s lesson: Okra 🌞🌱

Okra doesn’t just tolerate summer—it belongs to it.

While many plants may start to wither in the kind of heat we get here, okra rises up. Tall, steady, and unfazed. For this week’s lesson, we’re leaning into that resilience - looking at how okra earns its place in the garden, how to choose varieties that thrive in our climate, and what it really takes to grow something that loves the heat as much as we do.

Join us every Wednesday at the Skyfarm for Open Farm Days! A hands-on evening of learning, tasting, and exploring where you can dig in, ask questions, and see regenerative farming come to life on the rooftop of POST Houston.

This week's lesson : Cucumbers 🥒

For our cucumber lesson, we will be exploring the role of cucumbers in a summer garden, how to select varieties, as well as how to plant cucumbers. Our apprenticeship team recently planted these healthy starters into the soil, and they're growing fast! Come prepared to get your hands dirty as we work together to steward the Skyfarm into the summer season.

Brush up against its leaves and you’ll get that fresh lemon scent instantly.
