Sequoyah, a remarkable figure in Cherokee history, developed the Cherokee writing system in the early 19th century. Born in the 1770s, Sequoyah was initially illiterate in any language but was inspired to create a writing system for his people after seeing the utility of written communication among European settlers. Remarkably, despite having no prior experience with written language, Sequoyah invented a syllabary, a set of written symbols that represent syllables, each of which corresponds to a part of the Cherokee language. His dedication paid off in 1821 when he introduced the completed syllabary to the Cherokee Nation.The impact of Sequoyah's invention was profound and swift. Within just 25 years, nearly all Cherokee people had become literate in their new writing system, a feat unparalleled in the history of written language development.
