A friend sent this to me so I could share with other dog owners.
Dog Poisoned by the Diffuser.
Saturday night I got home late and my pittie didnât recognize me.
At first, I thought I had just startled him awake. Iâve worked with kids for years, and Iâve seen night terrors beforeâconfusion, fear, that distant, glassy look. Thatâs exactly what it felt like. I brushed it off, thinking heâd snap out of it.
But by Sunday morning, something was still wrong.
He wasnât himself.
Quiet. Disoriented. Withdrawn.
Not my normally goofy, affectionate, velcro-dog who follows me everywhere.
Then it hit me.
I had been running a brand-new essential oil diffuser almost nonstop. I turned it off immediately. By Sunday afternoon, he seemed a little better, and I hopedâso badlyâthat it was over.
It wasnât.
On Monday, while I was at work, my dog sitter called and said my pittie wouldnât come out from under the bed. Anyone who knows him knows how alarming that is. He loves people. He lives for attention. Hiding is not who he is.
My gut dropped.
I left work early and rushed home. The moment I saw him, my heart broke.
He looked at me like I was a stranger.
Confused. Afraid. Lost.
I rushed him to the emergency vet.
After exams, bloodwork, and a call to Pet Poison Control, we finally had an answer: tea tree oil toxicity. The essential oil I had been diffusingâthinking it was harmlessâwas slowly poisoning my dog.
His liver values were thankfully still okay, but we werenât out of danger. He was given subcutaneous fluids to help flush the toxins from his system, and we monitored him closely.
What shook me the most?
Both the vet and poison control said theyâre seeing more and more cases like this as essential oils become popular in homes.
I had no idea.
I truly believed I was creating a calm, healthy environmentâwhile unknowingly putting my best friend at risk.
Iâm sharing this because I donât want anyone else to learn the hard way like I did.
Please, if you have petsâespecially dogsâresearch every essential oil before using it. Many oils that are safe for humans can be extremely toxic to animals, even when diffused.
Iâm incredibly grateful my pittie is on the road to recovery.
If this story helps even one pet parent avoid the same scare, itâs worth telling.
đž Hug your dogs a little tighter tonightâand please, double-check whatâs in your diffuser.
