π¨πΎ NEW WORLD SCREWWORM UPDATE FOR PET OWNERS πΎπ¨
We have received several questions regarding New World Screwworm (NWS), so we wanted to provide the latest information available from the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC).
π As of June 11, 2026, Harris County and Montgomery County are NOT currently considered New World Screwworm infected zones.
π¬ What is New World Screwworm?
New World Screwworm larvae (maggots) are different from the typical maggots many people may have seen before. While most maggots feed on dead tissue, New World Screwworm larvae feed on living tissue and are typically found in:
β’ Open wounds
β’ Surgical incisions
β’ Skin infections
β’ Areas of damaged skin
These larvae are **not known to pe*****te healthy, intact skin.**
π Think you've found one?
If you believe you have found New World Screwworm larvae, please report it directly to the Texas Animal Health Commission at 979-212-5444. They will assign an investigator and provide guidance on next steps.
β οΈ Important:
The TAHC is currently able to test **larvae only**. They are **not testing adult flies** at this time. Adult New World Screwworm flies can closely resemble other common fly species, making visual identification unreliable.
πΆπ± If your pet has an open wound and you see larvae present, please contact us immediately. We can provide medical treatment for your pet and assist with obtaining samples for testing if appropriate.
π‘οΈ Prevention Matters!
Keeping pets on year-round parasite prevention may help protect against New World Screwworm infestations.
