Obssessed with recreating natural looking aquatic environments for clients looking for living art.

Hello, my name is Ben Johnson. I started Captive Aquatic Ecosystems in 2002 while I was a zookeeper at the Houston zoo Kipp aquarium. Initially I was hired to turn around and maintain the 4,000 gallon reef zones exhibit, but was put in charge of several other exhibits in short order. I started cleaning aquariums when I got off work and after a couple years, I was actually making more money away from the zoo than I was at it so I did the next thing.

The next thing was quitting the zoo in 2004 and pushing my own custom aquarium installation and maintenance company as far as I could. 15 years later, I’m still out there trying to outdo myself set-up after set-up.

My prospective clients can sometimes be tricky to find as they are not usually aquarists. I’m looking for successful individuals or businesses who have the income to enjoy the finer things in life. I want people to think of what I do as creating a living art installation for them and then maintain it on a regular basis, always guiding it in the proper direction with a keen eye for the little things that can derail a successful aquarium.

Freshwater, saltwater, koi ponds, outdoor water features, water walls and many other recreations of watery worlds is what we do.
