This picture doesn’t look like much, but THIS IS HUGE. There is always “a change” or a “flip of a switch” that happens with mustangs. Domestics as well, but for sure with mustangs that I watch and wait for. There is almost always something that keeps them separated from a connection with me. They duck their head away as if to hide, they keep looking out always searching for a herd, they are white eyed and don’t trust…something that shows the connection just isn’t there. Some of this is measurable-will they eat with me in the pen, will they eat in front of me, next to
Me, with my hand on their back-all things I use to measure how the trust is going.

But Sly.

Sly would NOT meet me at the gate. When I walk in he walks to his corner. Progress was when he turned and looked at me from his corner. Progress was when he stayed standing in his spot and didn’t leave at all. Progress was taking a step toward me-before exiting to his corner…

But on this day…

Sly met me at the fence. He stuck his nose through the panel to smell me. He didn’t move his head away as if to hide-he stood very soft eyed and relaxed as I reached through and petted him. He ate AS I was dumping his food into his bucket-he usually stays 10 feet back and waits until I’m done and take a step back…

Today, the switch flipped. Trust has been made. Today was a big day-and I never even put a halter on, but it was a massive win of a day.

Mustangs are different. Mustangs make you work for everything. Mustangs are worth it and make us better.

I love what I do. It’s time to ride.

Update on Sly! He is starting to gain weight and come around to all the civil things in life. I have trimmed a couple of his feet and he’s been great. Never even had to use a rope to teach him.

The “problem”: He still wants to bolt if he gets scared but we are working on that. He only goes about 20’ and turns around but I got a 20’ rope (ha). It’s less and less but still there. It’s my biggest issue (they always seem to have that ONE thing), but I know we will get it fixed. It isn’t about preventing, it’s about eliminating the issue. He needs to go on to a new home one day, and I cannot have this be an issue because it just cannot always be prevented, so no worries, it will be fixed but it is a bit frustrating at times. And he’s so smart that all of the things I do to fix it he is great at and it doesn’t happen so he’s smart to know when spinning and running will work.

He’s being saddled and carries a bit and has started on ground driving. He’s never had an issue with the ropes. I have hung off the saddle horn, stepped into and bounced in the stirrups and could easily, I think throw a leg over-so why don’t I?

This is where trainers really vary. Personally, I want everything solid. I don’t want to build on holes. For MAYDAY his hole was that I couldn’t touch his back feet. Everything else was solid. My friend kept saying just ride him and I would say not until I fix his back feet. To me, it doesn’t make sense to go ahead and get on, it’s just how I think and do things. For Drifter it was the fact he was so scared of anyone near him. But everything else was solid. I had a feeling if I could just get on him he would ride great (and I was right). I did go ahead and start riding him because I felt like it was what he needed. There is a point where we have to change things up or you are going to jump on the wheel of insanity AND you are simply reinforcing the horses issue by allowing it to continue. My point is-that’s horsemanship and why you cannot cookie cutter train mustangs. Really any horse but mustangs just don’t allow it lol.

Sly also doesn’t like the whip. He hasn’t been whipped, he just doesn’t understand it at all. He would rather me use a flag than a whip. And the bolting started with that. And once he figured out how to escape he started using it. So I have been using the whip to guide and teach him so that he understands he doesn’t have to flee when he isn’t sure about something. I don’t avoid using the whip as a tool-that would be prevention, and not fixing.

He still doesn’t greet me at the gate. But I can catch him easily in a 70’ round pen. He has earned his way into turn out time on a few acres and I can easily catch him there (once he’s done with his running ha).

So far, while he qualifies for the Las Vegas Challenge, I have not made any decisions to go. I see others already sliding stops and spins and working cattle…and I see others just now unloading wild ones…and everything in between. When I know, I’ll know, it that isn’t today.

I didn’t realize this was recorded in slow motion but here’s what is cool about his video. I mentioned I have been giving Sly a chance to let me in his world, working on that solid foundation of trust. When I have a horse I want to get my hands all over him, pet him, and really get to know every inch of him. This way I can tell when something is old or new or may be a potential issue or is something that needs addressing now.

I LOVE a curious horse. Once I slowed things down and let Sly relax-he started checking me out. It can take some bravery to stand while a horse rolls his nose and lips around your ears, and hair, and back lol. Today I had shorts on and he was mesmerized by my…knees 🤣. Then he discovered my not so flat stomach and nose that around a bit 🤦‍♀️. But I let him. Why would I don’t expect i only get to check him out. I let him do this for a while as he explored this bizarre humanoid up close. He kept going back to me knees until it tickled so much o couldn’t take it anymore.

Every horse brings their own personality, talents and curiosities. I kept thinking he was thinking she is curious and curiouser…

A while back I had three mustangs that qualified for the Mustang Champions competitions coming up. Two have gone on to competitors and I wish them the best of luck! In the meantime I still have “Sly.” He’s a big one and the one I posted recently that has the little half hearted double kick. He’s such a blessing to train and seems so “easy” after Drifter 😳. Just another reason we thank God for all things and find joy in even the hard times. Drifter definitely upped my horsemanship. Here’s a few things Sly has been learning. With the group of Oregon horses that came in, we just have his pen to work in for now. We would go to the other round pen but he doesn’t want to leave his pen while being lead 🤦‍♀️. So we don’t lol. Pics are captioned.

While we experienced one of the coldest few days in my Texas history, we received a load of Devils Garden mustangs from the USFS! We are a satellite location where people who adopted from Oregon are able to pick up their horse in Texas. They handled their trip well with a layover in Utah arriving at 1:00am here In Texas! We were ready and they unloaded smoothly. They had several days to settle in and the first pair are being picked up tomorrow.

After some technical issues with this page I finally got it all resolved and will be posting more now! Lots of exciting stuff coming up, I cannot wait to share!
