I don’t ever hate on our clients or try to make anyone feel like they’ve made bad choices.

A lot of trainers do. That’s not my vibe. We support our owners.

But there’s been a crazy influx lately of people needing training for puppies they’ve purchased from commercial pet stores. So I feel that this needs to be a teachable moment.

We love Java, he has a good temperament and he’s super cute. There’s always going to be positives. But the first 2 months of a puppy’s life is extremely important and shapes what kind of adult dog you’re going to have.

A pet store purchase is not the way to go.

Puppies that come from pet stores come from puppy mills. If you don’t know what that is, google it. But don’t be eating when you go down the puppy mill rabbit hole.

Every pet store puppy I’ve done a consult for has had the same main complaint. Won’t potty outside no matter what they do. Only wants to potty in the crate.

Almost like they were actually trained to potty in the crate…🤔💬

Pet store puppies don’t know what outside is.

They’ve never touched grass or been out of a display case prison.

They’ve essentially have been trained during their critical early developmental period to go potty in their pen, and they’ve been taught that being dirty is okay.

Not to mention the host of other health and environmental issues these puppies typically display, but that’s not the conversation today.

It’s extremely hard to break this habit and have a dog that is crate trained and house trained reliably going forward. We’re making progress with little Java, but it’s a ton of added work and a lot less sleep for me.

I support rescuing responsibility and I support buying responsibly.

A puppy mill is neither of those things, and purchasing from pet stores continues to fund the puppy mill industry.

Find a reputable rescue, or find a reputable, ethical breeder. We can offer referrals so you’re set up for success.

Make good choices friends.

The truth is, we believe many veterinarians and veterinary technicians share these same concerns and opinions. Unfortunately, far too many have been silenced, intimidated, or afraid to speak openly because of the power and influence of those in positions of authority.

What she wrote was honest, courageous, and desperately needed. People should not be afraid to speak the truth about their experiences.

It’s time for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and the entire veterinary community to stand together. We cannot continue allowing fear, intimidation, and bullying to silence people.

When good people stay silent, nothing changes. It’s time to stand up, speak out, and demand accountability.

Meet Mahana the formerly feral princess.

She and her brother Maverick were by their owners, had never left their yard, never had collars or leashes on, and had never seen the world.

So drop off day was a bit of a circus.

The first few days were a bit of a challenge. There’s still a lot of baggage to unpack.

But thankfully they have great owners who trusted us to help, and to continue to help, and they’re committed to these pups❤️

We always try to impress upon puppy owners the importance of our Puppy Jumpstart program for babies. The right foundation from the start is critical to avoid the struggles that Mav and Mahana have been experiencing.

with an 8 week old puppy doesn’t look like much.

It’s not advanced maneuvers, it’s not exciting, it’s games, , desensitizing, learning through play.

But Mav and Mahana are tangible evidence of the importance of the , knowing what to do and how to do it right.

Luckily Head Trainer Matt is a behavior expert, and as we wrap up 2 weeks the feral twins are ready to be productive members of their family 🥳

for Miss Toph!

This girl has stressed her owner out with some pretty serious dog reactivity. They live in an apartment in the middle of the city, so leash reactivity isn’t ideal.

Toph has done great in our 2 week board and train, and has done great being neutral around all my dogs, all the other training pups, and the neighborhood.

So now it’s time to start proofing out in public in the actual environment she’ll be living in.

And she’s been a rockstar 🤩

Can’t wait to reintroduce mom to the picture and transfer the training over.

Lets talk dog food.....

We feed Inukshuk dog food. Most of our clients make the switch. It’s simply the best. Why? Because you’ll be able to see the difference. I’m not going to post a bunch of wierd numbers or charts. I’m going to tell you what I see.

1) My competition dogs energy is so much better. Their stamina and ability to perform all day.

2) More nutrient and calorie dense= Less food.

3) I have personally seen dogs on medication or prescription food for allergies or digestive issues switch to the marine formula and never have to take meds again.

4) Better coat and overall body condition.

5) Less p**p

7) There are different formulas for different dogs. Puppies, old dogs, working dogs.

All the flashy, exciting, social media training is fun to watch.

All the sport training, bite work, nose work, trick training.

But how does that apply to you, and your life with your dog?

Do you want a high energy, high drive, working dog that needs a job?

Or do you want a dog that actually fits into your lifestyle?

The average pet dog is going to be expected to be calm 80% of the time.

Be able to settle and self soothe.
Be able to play with the kids and be around friends without over escalating and biting, jumping, going crazy.

So pick a training style that produces what you want out of life with your dog.

And that typically looks pretty boring.
