Genetics matter.

Both are labs, but one is working line and one is show line.

American Lab versus English Lab.

The American Lab is much higher energy, higher drive, high strung, lots of stamina and bred to need a job. Not ideal for the typical low energy pet home or as a family dog.

The English Lab is the typical couch potato, great temperament, very solid, lower energy but still active, the ultimate family dog. But when well bred, can also be a great weekend hunter or field trial retriever. Just a great all around dog.

Knowing what you’re getting and what fits in your lifestyle is important, because we can’t change genetics.

Research breeds and breeders. Know what you’re getting and make sure the temperament will fit your expectations and your lifestyle.

We have 3 acres all fenced in, so the dogs have lots of room to romp and play.

Whether it’s just for boarding or for training, having your dogs somewhere where they get to act like dogs, run, sniff, get dirty, have productive play sessions, be out in the fresh air… is so important.

Dogs need to be allowed to be dogs.

We’re all LOVING this cool weather in Houston!

Outdoor training sessions are finally enjoyable again and the dogs are having a blast hanging by the fire pit relaxing in the evenings 🍁🐶

Friends visit then leave, excitement happens, playtime happens, then it stops.

The puppy brain has to learn to settle in real life. The puppies are spending a lot of time just hanging out on the patio with me in this beautiful weather.

I love the Sit on the Dog exercise to teach calm in real life. The leash is tied to the leg of my chair, the pup has 4’ of room, and I ignore them.

That’s it.

My dogs wander in and out, maybe there’s a bit of play, maybe not, and the pups just have to learn to chill at my feet no matter what’s going on.

My dogs are also great at teaching the proper social interactions and have a very stable, calm energy. So the baby puppies learn that another dog doesn’t automatically mean excitement and overstimulation, and that rude behavior won’t be tolerated.

My dogs teach the opposite of what the social interactions at the dog park or doggie daycare teach. They teach the puppies the correct things.

Loads of learning, loads of dog-on-dog conversations, loads of training, and all I have to do is sit on my patio with a glass of w**e and a good book and ignore everyone🍷🐶 The Art of Doing Nothing…

All it takes is follow through. Practice Sit on the Dog a few times per week and after 30 days your life with your dog will be transformed.

I haven’t slept more than a couple hours for the last 4 nights, thanks to these 3 goblins😅

That’s the reality of bringing a new puppy home.

They have to go in the crate overnight and cry it out until they learn to self soothe and settle. If you let them sleep free, or give into the tantrum, it’ll never stop.

They learn immediately that screaming will get them what they want, and the demanding behaviors will start… and escalate.

And now we have problems.

Everyone also forgets that puppies are like newborn babies, they can’t hold their bladder for very long.

Whatever your expectations are for your puppy, lower them. By a lot.

I’m up every 2 hours all night long the first night with new puppies. If they’re raised properly by the breeder, I can usually have them sleeping through the night by 10-12 weeks old.

These guys are up to 4 hours between nighttime potty breaks on night 4.

This is why we have a 2 week puppy program, and a VIP all-inclusive puppy raising program.

Because puppy raising is hard, and it’s much easier to do it the right way from the beginning, instead of trying to fix problems later on.

Doing less sometimes does the most.

Puppies on the flex-pole learning to settle while life goes on around them.

If they want to throw a tantrum, no one pays them any mind and they learn that those behaviors will get them nowhere. So they stop.

They learn that having other dogs around doesn’t mean playtime, it means nothing, just something else to peacefully coexist with.

People walking around doesn’t mean they get attention.

Pull on the line, and it just pulls back…so let’s just give to that leash pressure.

Raising puppies is like raising kids. It’s guiding them on a journey of self discovery, and helping them grow into stable, good minded adults.

After 2 days of no sleep while crate training 3 new baby puppies… I may not have been making sound training decisions 🤣

But they had fun, and now we start leash training for real.

I get a lot of questions about what age leash training should be started. Immediately. These puppies are 8 weeks and 12 weeks old, and Steely who is 12 weeks should have already been taught leash pressure by this point. Spoiler alert, he was not.

Learning what leash pressure is and how to give into it is the entire foundation of all training. You won’t have a dog that walks nicely on a leash without understanding how to get over their natural oppositional reflex.

They’ve been getting used to having a slip leash around their neck and dragging it around. Now they’ll learn leash pressure next.

Settling, impulse control, emotional regulation, stress management, all things that are taught.

Sit stays don’t get you a dog you can live with.

Fear tactics for the win…

Just kidding.

But Miss Lilly has indeed been barky lately with her mom. Coming to Aunt Heather’s house to spend some time around the pack and go on some field trips is the right kind of refresher to get back on track.

Only good little dogs allowed around here 🐾
