Happy World Parrot Day! 🦜

Did you know: There are around 400 species of parrots! Besides being colorful and intelligent, parrots have a few traits in common, like a strong, curved beak for cracking nuts and seeds, and zygodactyl feet (two toes facing forward and two facing backward) for better grip while climbing. Almost 45% of parrot species are threatened with extinction. The pet trade and habitat loss are big factors affecting their populations. Join our zoo docents today at the parrot habitats from 11 am - 2 pm to learn more about these amazing birds! There'll be interactive activities, educational content, and giveaways!

Our zoo docents will be raising money today for Feathered Sanctuary Bird Rescue. They are a group of dedicated, caring volunteers that rescue, rehabilitate & rehome exotic parrots. ♥

Happy 11th Hatchday, Sassy! 🥳

Sassy is a Laughing Kookaburra, a bird species endemic to eastern Australia. They are in the kingfisher family and are related to our native Belted Kingfisher. They get their name from their unique "laughing" vocalization, which they use to establish territory. Sassy has been at the zoo since 2024 and has had one offspring since arriving with her mate, Boomerang.

Happy Alligator Day! 🐊🎉

You are probably familiar with our very well-known native species, the American Alligator, which resides in much of the southeastern US. However, we'd like to introduce you to the other alligator species - the Chinese alligator! This species is much smaller (only around 5 feet) and is critically endangered. At the Reptile House, you can come face-to-face with Fee, our resident Chinese alligator, in the summer. He is 31 years old and could live up to 70 years!

Meet George, Bill, and Spot! 🤝

These three handsome guys are white-tailed deer, New Jersey's native deer species. So why don't they look like the deer you've seen? They're leucistic! This condition is often confused with albinism. For albino animals, cells cannot produce melanin, the pigment responsible for dark coloration. So, an albino animal completely lacks dark pigmentation, and there are no "partial" albinos because all cells are affected equally. For a leucistic animal, all pigmentation is affected, not just melanin. Additionally, each cell may produce different amounts of pigmentation. This will manifest as an entirely white coat or a patchy coat, known as pie-bald, hence George, Bill, and Spot's unique coloration!

Vibrissae! 🐱

Judda's got whiskers for daysssss! Also known as vibrissae, cat whiskers are important sensory tools. They are surrounded by nerves and blood vessels that make them extremely sensitive. They can detect changes in air current, allowing cats to "feel" objects before they even come in direct contact with them! This is especially helpful since most cats hunt in the dark. 🌙

Happy Memorial Day! 🇺🇸

We are open today with regular hours, 10 am - 4:30 pm.

Did you know: The zoo doesn't close when it rains! Some of the animals love the rain, especially in the summer. In fact, cloudy summer days with light rain (*not a beach day*) are some of our busiest days, and you're likely to see some of the animals out enjoying the rain! ☔

Happy World Turtle Day (Part 3)! 🐢

🎙Here is your host, Timmy Timmel! (a.k.a. Tiny Tim)

Timmy: Say hello to our last guest for World Day, Ignacio the female Coahuila Box Turtle! Coahuila Box Turtles are endangered, found in a limited range of only 500 square miles in the Curatro basin in Mexico.

Ignacio: Pleasure to meet you.

Timmy: Now I hear you are also referred to as the Aquatic Box Turtle. Why is that?

Ignacio: That is because we tend to spend 90% of our time in the water.

Timmy: It says here that you are an endangered species. Why is that?

Ignacio: Between being hit by cars, loss of habitat, and illegal poaching, our population is in decline. But thanks to conservation efforts and zoos, we are getting our population back up.

Timmy: That's great to hear! Well, it’s getting late, so that’s all the time we have. Thank you for supporting us, and have a happy World Turtle Day!

Happy World Turtle Day (Part 2)! 🐢

🎙Here is your host, Timmy Timmel! (a.k.a. Tiny Tim)

Timmy: Our first guest today is Koson, the Malaysian Box Turtle!

Koson: It’s great to be here, Timmy!

Timmy: So you are an Asian Box turtle like me. Why is your shell so flat?

Koson: We are found in lowland wooded habitats with access to fresh water. We love to spend time in the water, so our shells are designed to help us swim in deeper sections of water than you can reach.

Timmy: Fascinating! And do you take your shell off to dry after a swim?

Koson: That’s silly! No turtle can remove our shell. It is part of our skeleton covered by keratin coverings called scutes.

Timmy: That’s cool. Thanks for coming on the show, Koson! We'll meet our next guest after the commercial break!

Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

🎙Here is your host, Timmy Timmel! (a.k.a. Tiny Tim)

Timmy: Good day, everyone! May 23 each year is World Turtle Day, a day to raise awareness about turtles. Did you know there are around 360 species of turtles alive on this planet, and they can be found on every continent except Antarctica? I’m a Yellow-Margined Box Turtle, and we are listed as endangered. We are omnivores, and are semi-aquatic…but enough about me. Stay tuned to meet our first guest!
