Our first time joining the Pet Expo for two full days was such a fun and meaningful experience! 😊

I was amazed seeing just how many dogs live on Oahu! 🫢
Not only dogs, but cats, bunnies, and other furry friends also stopped by the Lokahi booth.

It made me so happy to meet so many pet parents and share the products I personally hand-pick and truly love. One of the biggest highlights for me was being able to answer grooming and coat-care questions from several owners during the event.

Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by the Lokahi booth, and to Minami-san, Nao-san, and everyone who helped make this event possible. We truly appreciate all of your support!

One topic that came up again and again during the expo was double-coated dogs and haircuts, so I wanted to briefly share some information here as well.

———

About Double-Coated Dogs

Double-coated dogs have two types of fur:
• a protective top coat that shields the skin from UV rays and outside damage
• a soft undercoat that helps regulate body temperature

These two layers work together to keep dogs comfortable in both hot and cold weather.

Many owners told me:
“My dog looks hot, so I want to shave the coat shorter.”

I completely understand the thought process, but shaving or cutting a double coat too short can damage the coat’s natural function. It may expose the skin to sun damage, change coat texture, and reduce the coat’s ability to regulate temperature properly.

Even lighter trimming can sometimes affect the protective guard hairs.

So what is the best care for double-coated dogs?

The most important thing is proper coat maintenance:
• thorough bathing
• correct blow drying
• deshedding/brushing
• skin and coat moisturizing

This helps remove loose undercoat while keeping the coat healthy and functional.

At Lokahi, we generally do not recommend full haircuts for double-coated dogs unless there is a specific reason to do so. Every dog is different, and we always want to discuss with owners to decide what is truly best for each individual dog. 😊

👀‼️Be Careful with Overusing Deshedding Tools at Home‼️

Today we had a Miniature Dachshund whose owner was concerned about dry skin—and yes, there was some dandruff. But overall, the skin wasn’t in poor condition. Something about the coat felt off 🤔

After taking a closer look, we noticed that while most of the coat looked fine, the hair on the big area of back and sides was thinning—and more importantly, the top coat in those areas was almost completely gone.

When we asked what kind of brush was being used at home, the owner mentioned a dense deshedding tool. Most likely, the top coat had been unintentionally pulled out 😣

The top coat plays a crucial role in protecting your dog’s skin from UV rays and environmental damage. Without it, the skin can become vulnerable and irritated.

The owner was surprised, as they were only trying to do the best for their pup 💛 We recommended switching to a natural bristle brush (like a pig bristle brush), and they happily took one home 😊

This is a great reminder: even with the best intentions, using the wrong tools or techniques—especially for undercoat removal—can lead to issues. Proper coat care often requires professional knowledge.

If you’re unsure which tools are right for your dog, don’t hesitate to ask a professional groomer ✂️
At Lokahi, we’re always happy to help you choose the right tools and show you how to use them at home!

My 3-Year Grooming Journey ✂️
Model: Ami 🐶

Over the past few years, I’ve been slowly but steadily growing—learning new skills, improving my process, and focusing on better care for every dog.

There may not be dramatic changes, but I truly believe in consistent progress. Thank you to all my amazing clients and pups for trusting me and growing together with Lokahi 🤍

Excited to keep learning and bringing even better care to you all ✨

↓Full version if you have time🫣 It’s long.lol

I have been a groomer for 18 years, but after moving to Hawaii, launching Lokahi, and going through pregnancy and raising a child, it had been difficult to find opportunities to update my professional skills.

In February 2023, thanks to Chika Chika Moribe , I attended a trade show in Pasadena, California. In just four days, I experienced so many new tools, products, classes, and competitions—everything I saw was truly eye-opening.

That experience strengthened my desire to improve, provide better care, support each dog’s well-being, and create a better working environment for my team.

As my son’s preschool life became more stable and with the support of my family, I was finally able to focus on myself again. Since then, I’ve made it a priority to keep learning whenever I visit Japan.

I don’t consider myself naturally skilled or a fast learner, but I believe in steady progress 😊
Through continuous trial and error—not only in haircutting, but especially in preparation like bathing and drying—I’m confident my work has improved.

As a result, I feel that dogs who visit regularly have healthier skin and coats. While many of these efforts may go unnoticed, I can truly see the difference.

Because each dog is so important, Lokahi may feel like an “overly caring” salon at times, but I’m grateful for the clients and dogs who grow together with us, as well as for Minami and Nao’s support. Minami Tamura

As we celebrate our 9th anniversary this month, thank you so much for your continued support 🤍

In mid-August, Lokahi will be closed for one week while I attend SuperZoo in Las Vegas to take a CPR course.
I look forward to bringing back new knowledge and continuing to grow ✨

Thank you so much to everyone who reached out after seeing the news about flooding in Manoa — we truly appreciate your concern!

We’re happy to share that both our team and the shop are safe and were not affected. Nao had the day off, Yuka left Manoa before noon due to her appointment, and Minami has just safely left the shop as well.

It seems the flooding was caused by a nearby stream overflowing, but we’ve been informed that the roads around our shop are now clear and safe.

Our hearts go out to our neighbors who may have been affected by this flood — we’re thinking of you during this time.

We were so touched by the many messages we received, and even offers like “We’ll come pick you up in a truck if you need help!” 🥺 We are truly grateful for your kindness and support. Thank you always 🤍

Dogs who hate nail trims… is it really the nail trimming itself? It might be worth rethinking 🥺

Studies suggest that about 20% of dogs over 1 year old already have osteoarthritis, over 60% by age 5, and more than 80% by age 8. And over half of these cases go unnoticed.

So in many cases, it’s not the nail trim itself — it’s the pain from having their legs handled or standing on three legs that makes them say “NO!” 😣

So what can we do?

For pet parents:
• Keep nail trims consistent — at least once a month.
When nails get too long, dogs can’t grip the ground properly. Imagine wearing high heels all the time — constant strain and discomfort. Now imagine someone grabbing your feet 😇
• Maintain a healthy weight — excess weight puts more stress on joints.
• Be aware of your dog’s structure — some dogs are born with misalignment, and this may be more common nowadays, especially in mixed breeds.

For groomers:
• Careful observation
• Adjusting handling and positioning
• Using proper support tools

These are essential to keep dogs safe and comfortable 🙌
