A very sad day, but I’m holding on tightly to the precious memories and all the joy these two magnificent horses brought to us all. ✨🌈

I feel truly privileged to have not only watched them compete, but also to have shared quiet cuddles with them in their stables while I was at Carl’s training with my own superstars 🥰

Their legacy will live on in our hearts for many years to come.

I’d like to apologise for not being very active or sharing much over the last few weeks (or longer). I do send out a fairly regular Wednesday email with my latest finds and updates, and Abi sends a more science-focused one on Sunday evenings. You’re very welcome to join the free mailing list through the Intelligent Horsemanship website (and you can unsubscribe anytime).

The truth is, I’ve been plenty busy – I just haven’t been great at posting it all on Facebook. So if you’re following me there, you’ve probably only seen gift memberships, online horse psychology ads, and the occasional post asking for advice on winter gloves! It’s been very “me, me, me”, and I’m sorry about that.

My lack of posts isn’t due to nothing happening – it’s quite the opposite. Like many of you with horses, I’ve had so much to do and so many decisions to make.

My main focus is keeping you safe and helping you avoid wasting money. For your horses, it’s all about keeping them comfortable and happy, which ultimately helps keep you safe too and reduces unnecessary vet bills.

Coming up, I’ll be testing an alternative saddle for Hugo. The vet, farrier and I are also working closely on Hugo’s foot balance – we’ve done front X-rays and are making steady improvements. Getting the feet right now can help prevent tendon and ligament problems in the future (and so much more!).

And no, I’m not brave enough to share a hoof X-ray on Facebook – I know it would get engagement, but we all need to protect our mental health! 😂

I’m also making sure my arena surface is just right, as that’s another key step in preventing future issues.

Actually, that list doesn’t sound as overwhelming now I’ve written it down. Doesn’t everything feel more manageable once it’s on paper? Do you keep a list too?

To fill in the gaps from earlier, the road incident involved an older lady following far too closely as we were travelling along a very narrow lane towards a lay-by. Verity was riding Blue, and I was leading Presto.

As we reached the pull-in, another car came up and sped past us with only inches to spare, which startled Presto and sent him up the bank. Thankfully, Blue was completely steady. The original car saw what was happening but chose to overtake us anyway, which only added to the situation.

Presto isn’t traumatised, but he is understandably unsettled. It will take a bit of work to rebuild his full confidence on the roads. Small cracks in confidence can easily turn into bigger reactions if left, so we’ll be going back to foundation training to make sure he feels safe, calm and secure on the roads again.

This is what many people don’t want to deal with…older horses and the little inconveniences, the extra steps it takes to keep them thriving each day. Sitting in the barn, waiting patiently as they finish their warm mash, knowing it takes them longer to eat than it takes you to do all your chores. Watching their joints stiffen, adjusting blankets, mixing supplements, making sure they’re comfortable.
It isn’t always easy. But they gave you their best years, their strength, their spirit, their loyalty. They carried you, trusted you, worked for you. They gave without question.
The least we can do is give back with patience, love, and dignity in their twilight years. Because they deserve nothing less.

A stallion no more!
😢 gelded yesterday all went well
Reuben is 7Years old and pure class
He is 16h of chunk and handsomeness!
He has been a very successful racer and now it’s time tofind a new job!
He had a good ridden reputation even as a stallion so we are sure he will go from strength to strength
