Originally, this one didn’t sound great.
A quartering-to shot with a bow, and the deer’s reaction screamed muscle hit. After talking more with the hunter, it sounded more like a 50/50 stomach–intestine hit. Then the picture of the arrow came through my phone—and that told the real story.

Clear stomach and intestine hit.
Green puree. Long white hair. Sponged-on red fletching patterns. In the dog-tracking world, it doesn’t get any better than that—this is Luna’s favorite kind of track.

450 yards in 4.5 minutes.
Over the creeks and through the thickets the hunter had their deer recovered quickly. Another deer going to feed a family. That’s what it’s all about.

Praise God.

#65 tailgated for the season on Luna’s 3rd Birthday today! 🐾🎉

A hunter’s first deer — recovered.

This deer was shot yesterday with a .350 Legend, quartering away. It was bumped from its bed about 1 hour after the shot. Based on the sign at the hit site — big, bubbly blood — the initial thought was stomach, liver, lung. However, that turned out to be incorrect.

This deer traveled roughly 400 yards with a pure intestine/stomach hit only.

Let’s talk about “lung blood”

Big, bubbly, frothy blood is often called lung blood, and that’s partly true.
However, anytime blood is forced out of the body under pressure, it can create bubbles. This is commonly seen with:

Lung hits

Non-lethal neck hits

Small arteries, whether the hit is lethal or not

In this case, the deer likely had a small artery clipped, which produced the bubbling blood and made the hit appear more lethal than it truly was.

🙏 Praise God

Big shout-out to Andrew Myer and Chesapeake Blood Trackers for sending us this track! He’s my go-to tracker for the Eastern Chesapeake and Denton, Maryland area.

We spoke with the hunter that morning—he felt confident about a quartering-to shot with a .308. He watched the deer run about 80 yards, but the only sign at the hit site was long white hair. After giving the deer all night, he tracked about 120 yards, marked last blood, and backed out.

Based on everything, I gave him a 90–95% chance we’d recover this buck. Typically, a deer hit with a high-powered rifle like that only makes it a couple hundred yards before bedding and expiring. Well, we did find him—but he made us work for it.

This deer traveled three-quarters of a mile, leaving only a single drop of blood about every 200 yards just to confirm we were still on track. Luna was running so hot I honestly thought we might be pushing it—but at 1,200 yards, there he was… stiff.

Praise God! 🐾🦌

P.S. Track was ran on lead and the Maryland DNR was called before and after track.

Sometimes deer are left in the woods during firearm season because hunters assume they missed. When a deer is shot at 80–120 yards, it can be hard to pinpoint the exact hit site compared to a bow shot at 20 yards. On top of that, firearm-hit deer often bleed far less than deer hit with a broadhead, and you don’t have the benefit of arrow sign to show where the impact was.

There are two key things I want hunters to be mindful of at the hit site—especially if the shot might have been too far back:

1. Long white hair (3–4 inches)
2. Green stomach content

If you find either of these signs, take a picture, back out, and call a tracker. These are classic indicators of a gut hit, and pushing the deer will reduce recovery chances.

But if you don’t see these signs, don’t give up.
I’ve seen plenty of deer double-lunged with a firearm that traveled 100 yards and left zero blood for the first 50–75 yards. In these cases, rely on:

Leaf disturbance

Kicked-up ground

Fresh hoof prints

The deer’s line of travel

Be patient, slow down, and trust the sign—even when there’s no blood.

Good luck this weekend, and shoot straight!

Things are slowing down for tracking. Hunters are getting burnt out and archery season is winding down—but in my opinion, this week and next (WMU 5C/5D or Maryland) are the most overlooked windows to tag a true mature buck. Deer movement might feel boring now, but those older bucks paced themselves. While the younger ones are already worn out, the mature ones are still slipping up and daylighting for the last few receptive does.

We had the pleasure of heading back into the mountains today. Luna ran a perfect line on a stomach/intestine-hit deer, and it’s now off to the butcher.

Praise God!

Took a trip down to Maryland today to track my own doe with Skye. Brought her favorite green lead and made sure to give the good folks at the DNR office a call before we started.
The deer went about 100 yards, bedded, got back up, and slipped out of sight. Heard a loud crack on impact, so I figured we hit bone, and there wasn’t much blood to go on.
After giving it a few hours, Skye went to work on what was likely a known-dead deer — and she absolutely crushed it. Luna would be proud of her. Praise God.
