Born Free Pet Shelter provides a critical service to dogs and their owners in Southwest Miami-Dade County since 1981. Born Free a No Kill shelter is serving the Redland and Southwest Miami-Dade County community by rescuing dogs from that community. The 5 acre property size allows for the care of animals in a humane, open environment where animals can exercise. We have volunteers who help with our
fundraisers, adoption process and care of shelter pets. We are currently running a High School Student volunteer program the students earn community service hours for their efforts. Our volunteers include students from the University of Miami, Eagle Scout candidates as well as caring adults from the community. Outreach efforts include Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet our partner websites for support with adoptions. Our affiliations include New Pet Alerts, Found Animals Foundation, the Shelter Pets Project and All Paws. We use classified newspaper ads, social media and have had TV news coverage to try to help with the adoption process. We have a monthly newsletter going out to supporters. Born Free Shelter has a spaying/neutering and microchip program for our dogs. Pet Project for Pets supports us with food donations. Presently we are caring for 135 animals, some of which have special needs; epileptic, blind, deaf, paraplegic, as well as many seniors. Challenges are the increasing number of pets that are abandoned and the prevention of more pets from being abandoned. Our fundraisers, an annual benefit and donations are our only sources of income. We would greatly appreciate your consideration for financial support maintaining the shelter and its’ mission to find permanent homes.
