Yes! 👏👏👏 It's about the relationship with your hound - not the quarry!

So this morning I was messaging with a friend, who is having an issue with a dog he absolutely loves, treeing possums. He has tried everything to break him from it and the dog won't stop. He said "I cant have a dog that trees possums". My response "You could". I'm definitely not throwing this guy under the bus, he is a dear friend of mine. However this issue instantly made me look deep into the coercive persuasion we hound hunters place each other in. Why do we look down on treeing possums? Because somewhere, someone told us it was bad. Borderline blasphemous! To be clear I'm guilty of this too, but I plan to change this. We seem to get this philosophy that if it's not a Raccoon, Bear, Cat or Squirrel that the hound was specifically trained for then it's not to be tolerated or enjoyed. And it's almost expected that a hunter who may enjoy his dog treeing a possum or whatever off game is less of a man or a subpar houndsmen. But if we take the rock that is "being a houndsmen" and chip away everything that really doesn't matter. At the core we find a sculpture of what its all about. You and your dog! Not the game pursued. It's about that dog and witnessing it's amazing God gifted talents to track scent. No matter what game is pursued the dog still had to do the same thing that makes us love it! So I leave you with this, don't worry what the Facebook hunters say or the guys at the club. If you love your dog more than what is in the tree, enjoy your dog. You are the one who feeds it, you get to choose how you feel about its performance.
