The flavors of fall are cozy for us, but not always safe for pets. Chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic can be toxic. Even a small bite can cause big problems. Plain canned pumpkin, on the other hand, is safe and can even help digestion.

If your pet ever gets into something they should not eat, call or text us here at San Benito Veterinary Center right away! 831.637.2580

Wildfire Smoke Safety Reminder: If you can smell smoke, your pets are breathing it too.

The air close to the ground can be five to ten degrees warmer than what your weather app shows, and that is exactly where your dog lives. On top of that, sidewalks and pavement absorb heat fast and can burn paws in seconds.

A good rule of thumb: if you cannot stand on the pavement barefoot for seven seconds, it is too hot for your dog.

Avoid midday walks. Choose early mornings or later evenings when temperatures are safer. Keep your pet hydrated, offer frozen treats, and use food puzzles or indoor games to help them stay active while staying cool.

Northern California summers can still hit triple digits in August. Keep walks to early morning or evening when temperatures are lower. Always provide plenty of shade and fresh water. Never leave your pet in a parked car, even for a minute!

Planning a camping trip? Nature is not always as gentle as your backyard.
The Northern California wilderness is beautiful but it can also be risky for pets. Hazards like snakes, foxtails, ticks, and toxic algae in lakes are more common than many pet owners realize.

Before you head out, make sure your pet is protected. We can help with updated vaccines, flea and tick preventatives, and tips for safe travel. A quick gear check can also ensure you have the right supplies, from paw protection to pet-safe first aid.

Enjoy the great outdoors with peace of mind.

Late summer means peak foxtail season!

Those small, dry grass seeds might look harmless, but they can cause serious problems for pets. Foxtails can work their way into ears, paws, eyes, and even noses, leading to pain, infection, or worse.

If your dog is shaking their head, pawing at their face, or suddenly limping after a walk, it could be a foxtail. These seeds are common in Northern California, especially in dry, grassy areas during August.

Keep fur trimmed around paws and ears, avoid off-leash hikes through tall grass, and check your pet after every outing.

If you suspect a foxtail, contact us right away: 831.637.2580

As kids head back to school, pets may feel a little confused or lonely with the sudden quiet at home. Dogs and cats thrive on routine, so try to keep mealtimes and playtime consistent.

Leave out familiar toys or a piece of clothing that smells like their favorite human!
