PSA! PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: RATTLESNAKE SEASON IS HERE 🐍

We are already seeing an unusually high number of rattlesnake bites this early in the season, more than we’ve seen in the past two years combined.

⚠️ Even more concerning:
This year, we are encountering a new pattern of envenomation in our area. While our local Pacific rattlesnake typically causes tissue damage and swelling, we are now seeing cases with neurologic symptoms, including weakness and even paralysis in affected pets.

🐾 What this means for pet owners:

Please be extremely vigilant when letting your dogs or cats outside—especially during early morning, evening, and in brushy or rural areas.

✅ We strongly recommend:

* Snake aversion training for pets in high-risk areas
* Keeping pets leashed or supervised when outdoors
* Clearing yards of brush, woodpiles, and rodent activity

🚨 If your pet is bitten:

* GO IMMEDIATELY to a veterinary clinic
* DO NOT give any medications at home
* Call us while you are on the way so we can prepare for your arrival

⏳ Time is critical—early treatment can be life-saving.

We are here for you and your pets. Please share this message with your neighbors and community to help keep our animals safe.

There’s a lot of variation in how veterinary dental procedures are performed — and recently, we’ve learned there may be some confusion about what’s offered locally.

So here’s exactly what we do:

Every single dental procedure at our hospital includes full-mouth dental X-rays. Every patient. Every time.

Because the reality is — most dental disease happens below the gumline, where you simply cannot see it without imaging.

In addition, our patients receive:
• Pre-anesthetic lab work
• IV catheter and fluids
• Continuous anesthetic monitoring
• Full oral exam with probing of each tooth
• Extractions only when medically necessary
• Comprehensive, individualized pain management
• Advanced anesthetic support when indicated
• A sterile, single-use endotracheal tube

We don’t cut corners when it comes to patient care — and we don’t rely on guesswork.

If you’ve heard otherwise about what’s available in this area, we’re always happy to answer questions and walk you through our standards.

Because your pets deserve medicine rooted in quality, not shortcuts.

Picture included shows two abscessed (infected) roots, which would not be visible above the gum line.

🚨 Community PSA from San Benito Veterinary Center 🚨

We want to bring your attention to a product currently being marketed over-the-counter for dogs: “Wag Labs Allergy & Itch Relief Tabs.”

This product contains 50 mg of modified cyclosporine — a powerful immunosuppressive medication that is NOT safe for unsupervised use.

Cyclosporine is a prescription medication that veterinarians carefully prescribe and monitor. It is typically reserved for moderate to severe allergic disease only after appropriate diagnostics and screening to ensure your pet can safely tolerate it.

⚠️ Why this is concerning:
Giving an immunosuppressive drug without veterinary guidance can put your pet at serious risk.

Cyclosporine works by suppressing the immune system, which can:
• Reduce your dog’s ability to fight infections
• Reactivate underlying or hidden infections
• Increase risk of serious illness if not properly monitored

⚠️ Potential side effects include:
• Vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite
• Gum overgrowth
• Increased susceptibility to bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections
• Risk of opportunistic infections
• Possible effects on liver and kidney function
• Increased risk of certain cancers with long-term use

Before prescribing cyclosporine, veterinarians typically:
✔️ Perform bloodwork
✔️ Evaluate for underlying infections or disease
✔️ Discuss risks vs. benefits
✔️ Monitor closely throughout treatment

💡 Important:
This is NOT a supplement — it is a potent prescription medication that should never be given without veterinary oversight.

🚫 If you are currently using this product:
• Discontinue use immediately
• Schedule an exam with your veterinarian as soon as possible

Your pet’s safety is our top priority. If you have any questions or concerns about itch relief options, we are here to help guide you toward safe and effective treatments.

We’re excited to share some happy personal news with our incredible community! Doctors Arthur and Lindsey Sanders have welcomed their newest, and last, family member to the crew. Our hearts (and hands!) are full, and we’re so grateful for the love and support we’ve already felt from you all.

While Drs. Sanders are on paternity and maternity leave, we want to reassure our clients that the hospital will continue operating at full hours thanks to the wonderful coverage provided by Dr. Ruth and Dr. Hernandez. We are so thankful for their dedication and commitment to our patients and team.

Because our community has an ongoing need for advanced imaging with ultrasound, Dr. Lindsey Sanders will still be coming in weekly and on an urgent basis to perform ultrasounds. This ensures there is no lapse in care and that our patients continue receiving the diagnostics they need, when they need them.

We also want to take a moment to say how proud we are that all of our doctors live right here in Hollister and are truly part of this community. Many of us have kids in the same schools, dance classes, gymnastics programs, churches, and activities as our clients; that connection means everything to us!

We don’t just work here. We live here. We raise our families here. And we deeply love and value this community and the trust you place in us every day. Thank you for supporting our team, our families, and the care we provide.

Cats love exploring holiday trees but it can be dangerous! Here are a few tips from us to you to keep them safe:

>> Secure the tree: Use a heavy stand and anchor the tree to a wall or ceiling to prevent tipping.

>> Avoid dangerous decorations: Do not use tinsel, thin garlands, or edible ornaments like chocolate or candy canes.

>> Move breakable ornaments up high: Hang glass or small ornaments at least 5 feet off the ground.

>> Use deterrents at the base: Place aluminum foil, double-sided tape, or a citrus scent around the bottom to discourage climbing.

>> Offer alternative climbing options: Provide cat trees, shelves, or interactive toys nearby to redirect their attention.

>> Supervise when possible: Never leave your cat alone with a lit or decorated tree for long periods.

Following these steps keeps your cat safe and prevents your tree from becoming a disaster zone.

>> Secure the tree to prevent tipping.

>> Avoid tinsel, small ornaments, and edible decorations that cats might swallow.

>> Use deterrents like double-sided tape or a citrus scent on lower branches.

>> Provide plenty of alternative play and climbing areas for your cat.

>> Always supervise when your cat is near the tree.

Keep your furry friends happy and healthy while enjoying the holiday decorations.
