Wow. The moment you realize that no matter how many times you look, what you thought was “she” is officially a “he”. MM G. pulchripes “Chaco golden knee” all hooked out.
Story: We got him last August unknown s*x. He was (to me) on the larger side so I was thinking female. After a great molt, I grabbed what I was sure to be a female molt without even really looking at the tarantula. Went to the table-looked-shook my head in disbelief-looked again, grabbed my glasses looked again-shook my head-cleaned my glasses (cause you never know right!?!) looked one more time and then finally decided it’s not just my eyesight, this is a male. Then thought-why don’t you just go look at the tarantula for hooks to verify?? Yes, yes, still male 🤪 If you are doing a breeding project PM me!

For those interested in s*xing your tarantula, Reba’s molt gives us a great example of what to look for in your female tarantula. The area circled in blue is what will be different between s*xes. The female will have a “flap” (spermatheca) above a slit that will darken as she ages. (The male may have a slit or a line, or it may be smooth, but no “flap”) Difficult to see until they reach a certain size, it become more obvious as they age. Try wetting the molt a bit and use a jewelers loupe or a magnifying glass on smaller molts. Happy keeping!
