We wanted to spread the word on a new toxicity that is starting to become more common.

Apoquel is a common drug that is used for atopic dermatitis or allergic skin disease. When used as directed, it is safe and effective. However, we have been seeing an increase in toxicity with their new pork flavor tabs. Both cats, yes cats(!!) and dogs are eating the pork flavored chew tablets.

Unlike the regular white tablets, the chew tabs are leading to much more significant side effects:
-severe vomiting/diarrhea
- lethargy, dull mentation, elevated third eyelids
-Cardiac rhythm disturbances, hypotension, new onset heart murmur
-eye swelling, high eye pressure
-significant kidney and liver insult
- suppression of all blood cells ( Red, white, and platelets)

Immediate decontamination is STRONGLY recommended and immediate protective care such as activated charcoal, IV lipids and N-acetyl cysteine may help prevent some of the toxicity symptoms.

If you have a large dog on this medication and a cat in the house hold, please discuss the pros and cons of the chewable flavor tabs. 1 x 16mg tablet is enough to cause significant changes in a small cat. Many cats are eating the whole bottle! May cats are developing fatal complications BUT dialysis and aggressive care has saved 2 cats from death.

This is a safe and useful drug but there is too much of a good thing!

What’s your diagnosis? 👀 This tiny patient made a BIG decision… and swallowed a chicken wing whole! 🍗

Radiographs helped us determine where the wing was and whether it posed an immediate threat. One interesting thing about this case is how different the chicken bone appears in size depending on the view taken. This is a great example of why taking multiple views of a 3D object is so important. Different angles give us the most complete picture (literally!) of what’s happening inside and help guide the best treatment plan.

In this case, the good news is that stomach acids can sometimes digest cooked bones. With close monitoring, this pup was able to go home for conservative management.

⚠️ Important reminder: Cooked bones can still be dangerous and may cause obstructions or perforations. Always reach out to your vet if your pet eats something they shouldn’t!

🐾 Ask Professor Gus about Heartworms 🐾

Heartworms are dangerous parasites that live in a dog’s heart and lungs. They’re spread by mosquitoes and can cause serious illness, or worse, if left untreated.

There's no need to worry because prevention is simple and effective! Monthly preventatives, given year-round, keep your dog safe and healthy. 🐶💛

Tip from Professor Gus: Even dogs that remain mostly indoors aren’t completely safe. Mosquitoes can sneak in! Keep your pup protected all year.

If you see red or purple bruise like lesions on the under side or less haired region on your pet… it’s black fly bites! 🙀 Usually, this is more of a heart stopping finding for the owner of the pet. it usually doesn’t bother the dog/cat. However in some cases of excessive licking or itching, intervention may be required.

🐾 Know Your Breed: French Bulldog 🐾

The French Bulldog has been the most popular breed in the United States since 2022, and it’s easy to see why. They’re charming, affectionate, and full of personality!

But like all breeds, Frenchies come with unique health considerations that pet parents should be aware of.

As a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, French Bulldogs can have narrowed nostrils, a longer soft palate, and a smaller airway structure. This can increase the risk of breathing difficulty, heat intolerance, and airway obstruction. Some dogs may benefit from surgical procedures to improve airflow and comfort.

Their anatomy can also contribute to other common concerns, including:
• Increased risk of heat stroke
• Eye injuries due to shallow eye sockets
• Dental crowding and disease
• Skin fold infections
• Chronic ear infections and allergic skin disease
• Orthopedic and spinal conditions such as luxating patella and hemivertebra

Frenchies may also experience gastrointestinal issues, including reflux and, in some cases, aspiration risk due to increased airway pressure during breathing.

None of this changes what makes them wonderful dogs, it simply means they require informed, proactive care. Regular veterinary visits, maintaining a healthy weight, using a harness instead of a collar, and considering pet insurance early can all make a big difference.

Choosing a breed means understanding their genetics, tendencies, and needs, and being prepared to support them through life.

Stay tuned for the next breed in our Know Your Breed series! 🐶

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we want to talk about something not often discussed: mental health in veterinary medicine. 💚

Veterinarians and veterinary technicians face some of the highest levels of stress in any profession. Studies show veterinarians are 2–4 times more likely to die by su***de than the general population, with veterinary technicians also at increased risk.

Why? It’s a combination of factors many people don’t see:
– High-pressure environments, especially in emergency veterinary medicine
– Emotional strain and compassion fatigue from caring deeply for every patient
– Difficult conversations about treatment, cost, and end-of-life care
– Client conflict and, increasingly, online criticism and bullying
– Significant financial stress, with average veterinary school debt exceeding $200,000

We share this not for sympathy, but for awareness.

Behind every exam, emergency surgery, and late-night case is a team that cares deeply and is doing their best under intense pressure.

If you’ve ever had a positive experience with a veterinary team, a small act of kindness, patience, or understanding can go further than you think.

In the first 7 days of May, we have seen 40 more emergencies compared to 2024!
What have we been seeing this week you ask....
-Feline urinary obstructions
-Congestive heart failure
-Albuterol Toxicities: we have seen 3 this week! This can be exposure through the nebulizer packet or chewing on an inhaler.
-Pyometra ( uterine infection)
-vomiting due to foreign body
- intussusception ( try saying that fast!) this is when the small intestines tunnels into it self, kind of like a sock that is double over on itself. We've seen several kittens/young cats with this condition this year.
-seizures, seizures, and more seizures
-quills, quills, quills, quills, quills and more and more quills
- a ton of tick born disease ( lyme and anaplasma on a daily basis!)
