UPDATE: MAVERICK IS SAVED! We found him a wonderful foster family in Syracuse and we will get him the training he needs. More to follow tomorrow.
YORK, NY.
MAVERICK NEEDS A MIRACLE.
SOS: Saturday, August 2, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. That is how long we have to find foster for this two-year-old Golden Retriever dog, aka Maverick. Or he's going to be killed.
This isn't one where there are any bad guys or someone to blame. Sometimes things just go bad. Maverick was in a loving home with a family that loves him as of yesterday. He has been camping, to Assateague Island... this was the all American family with the All American Golden Retriever. There had been some changes in the home of late and some stress, but no one could have seen this coming. Yesterday, Maverick's family gave him a new toy. He was playing with it when a six-year-old little boy went to take the toy away, all in the spirit of play. This was his six year old... his brother... who he cuddled with, walked to the bus stop with... the kid did nothing wrong. For whatever reason, Maverick went and bit his face. While the child will be ok, Maverick did substantial damage. Maverick is stressed right now and will need a decompression period in his new environment.
The family is devastated but he can't be there. While he had a couple minor squabbles with another dog in the house, this was his only bite of a human and no one saw it coming. Out of all the Hail Mary's we have tried and completed through the years... this will be one of the harder ones. But we will try. He was going to be put down tomorrow... we bought him another day to try and make a miracle happen. If the right home steps up for foster, we will provide training to work with Maverick and help him become a more balanced dog so that this never happens again. We have had a lot of luck with troubled Goldens and we KNOW we can do it again... if the right home steps up to save him. Maverick is fixed and up to date on his shots.
Maverick has lived with dogs and done well, though his squabbles with a fellow dog in the house are of course relevant. He has lived with cats and done well. There is a lot of good here. He loves typical Retriever things... fetch, cuddling, walks, etc. If you are the right home, meaning adult only and ideally either no other dogs or are willing to keep Maverick separate from the other dogs until we can train... please consider taking a chance on him. One bad decision shouldn't cost Maverick his life... but it will unless we can make a miracle happen by Saturday. If you are not the right fit for Maverick... please SHARE to help MAVERICK's miracle come true.
