When we are working on the command "Stay", not only do I tell my clients to use it in every day life like when they leave the room, shut the door to their dog's crate, or leaving the house. But I also love to find fun photo opportunities to make use of the command as well. It really makes training more fun and easy rather than a chore.

*note- when you're first starting those picture opportunities be prepared to take tons of pics and still not get the shot before the puppy breaks the "stay". Lol! But have fun with it, be consistent, and keep your sessions short you'll get tps
1lhere.
As you can see Stitch has some work to do. Lol! In all fairness this was her first photo session she had to concentrate instead of just be cute.

Change of seasons, livestock, and predators

If you own livestock you are no stranger to predators and the ever ending battle for livestock safety.
When the seasons change we tend to see more predators than usual. Whether it be mating season, drought, or just season changing. It becomes easier to come into ranches and get livestock rather than hunt. So that means its time to bump up your security system on your fences, barns, hutches, and coops.
Every predator comes with their own stealth ways to get your livestock. So you get to be as cunning as they are when building or adding onto livestock enclosures. Research thr wildlife in your area and learn their behavior well. YouTube is a great source for animal behavior videos. Remember as we populate more and more places it becomes easy for these animals to get use to humans and not really caring about random scare tactics. After you go rounds with a Great Horned Owl over a prize rooster you just got 6hrs prior to the attack you'll understand. Also beware all Birds of Prey are protected. So all you can do really is your best to prevent them from getting in, stand outside for hours in hopes that they get bored and leave (🤣), or get yourself a livestock guardian dog.
Speaking of dogs, lets talk canine predators real quick. Not only do you have to be concerned with wildlife such as coyote, wolves (depending on your area), and foxes, you get to worry about neighboring dogs that run loose from time to time. Canines not only dig to get your livestock but they climb and rip at fences or wooden doors. Electric fences do help detour canines as well as a livestock guardian dog.
Big cats can also be a problem. For you house cat owners you know how deadly a cat can be when it comes to prey, so it shouldn't be a surprise how they are on a larger scale.
Next up in line of predators you get to outwit are animals like badgers, skunks, weasel, raccoons, opossum, etc. These guys are gonna go more for your smaller livestock such as rabbits, chickens, eggs, etc. Snakes are also notorious for smaller stock as well.
I know it seems like alot. But if you take all of these animals into consideration when building your livestock enclosures you won't have to do much more than regular maintenance when the seasons change and predators are on the move more than usual. Good luck out there, and happy ranching.

Fall Harvest and Benefits for your livestock

For most folks fall means pumpkin spice, fun warm comfy clothes, crisp mornings, and leisurely drives to see the trees turn colors.
But what about all those fall veggies? Not only are pumpkin patches a fun family trip, they offer goodies for livestock as well! Pumpkins are a great source of vitamins A, C and E as well as minerals like potassium and iron. Did you know the pumpkin seeds as well as other squashes contain cucurbitacin, a natural deworming compound. Great way to naturally get rid of parasites.
We all know carrots are a fan favorite when it comes to livestock. But not only is this a tasty treat, carrots provide betacarotene which is converted to vitamin A. Great thing about vitamin A is it supports immunity, heart & lung health, as well as fertility in cows. And speaking of cows, for those who do the dairy cow thing you want that boost in vitamin A and fatty acids carrots bring to the table.
But lets not forget other veggies like turnips, kale, broccoli, brussle sprouts, and other brassica plants. The tops and roots are full of nutrients and leaves high in crude protein.
So as you harvest your late summer crops remember your livestock would appreciate anything you might want to share with them.

*note: Brassica plants should really only be fed to pigs and ruminant animals. And in small amounts at that.*

Rabbit for dinner?
A good source of protein.

"You raise your rabbits for meat!?!?" I hear it all the time, and people sound absolutely mortified as they ask that question. Yes we raise our rabbits for meat, and yes we eat them. We put alot thought into the breeds that make up our meat rabbits. These are not pedigree show bunnies by any means. They are a cross breed of a few breeds to give us large meat rabbits that have the perfect bone to meat ratio.
Rabbit meat is a phenomenal source of high protein and packed with essential nutrients. On top of that it has superior digestibility compared to other meats. Its a fantastic option for those following a high protein diet. In fact rabbit meat has roughly 9-11 grams MORE protein per 100 grams than the average serving of fish. Rabbit meat is often leaner than fish with lower fat and calories.
"What does rabbit meat taste like?" Well its alot like chicken in the sense that it takes on whatever flavor you spice it up with. I can tell you there are tons of recipes for cooking rabbit meat. So far low and slow or in a stew seems to work best for me. So if any of you have tried other quicker recipes please feel free to post them in the comments!
Don't forget we do offer Rabbit Processing Classes from time to time for those who want to learn, as well sell our stock. And as always we are here to answer any questions ypu may have.
