Change of seasons, livestock, and predators
If you own livestock you are no stranger to predators and the ever ending battle for livestock safety.
When the seasons change we tend to see more predators than usual. Whether it be mating season, drought, or just season changing. It becomes easier to come into ranches and get livestock rather than hunt. So that means its time to bump up your security system on your fences, barns, hutches, and coops.
Every predator comes with their own stealth ways to get your livestock. So you get to be as cunning as they are when building or adding onto livestock enclosures. Research thr wildlife in your area and learn their behavior well. YouTube is a great source for animal behavior videos. Remember as we populate more and more places it becomes easy for these animals to get use to humans and not really caring about random scare tactics. After you go rounds with a Great Horned Owl over a prize rooster you just got 6hrs prior to the attack you'll understand. Also beware all Birds of Prey are protected. So all you can do really is your best to prevent them from getting in, stand outside for hours in hopes that they get bored and leave (🤣), or get yourself a livestock guardian dog.
Speaking of dogs, lets talk canine predators real quick. Not only do you have to be concerned with wildlife such as coyote, wolves (depending on your area), and foxes, you get to worry about neighboring dogs that run loose from time to time. Canines not only dig to get your livestock but they climb and rip at fences or wooden doors. Electric fences do help detour canines as well as a livestock guardian dog.
Big cats can also be a problem. For you house cat owners you know how deadly a cat can be when it comes to prey, so it shouldn't be a surprise how they are on a larger scale.
Next up in line of predators you get to outwit are animals like badgers, skunks, weasel, raccoons, opossum, etc. These guys are gonna go more for your smaller livestock such as rabbits, chickens, eggs, etc. Snakes are also notorious for smaller stock as well.
I know it seems like alot. But if you take all of these animals into consideration when building your livestock enclosures you won't have to do much more than regular maintenance when the seasons change and predators are on the move more than usual. Good luck out there, and happy ranching.
