We’ve celebrated quite a few national animal days this month, and today we’re recognizing one of the South’s most iconic reptiles🐊

Happy National Alligator Day! Fun fact: alligators can go through around 2,000 - 3,000 teeth in their lifetime because they continuously replace them as they wear down.

Happy World Otter Day from Jacob & Olive 🦦🤎

Asian small-clawed otters may be the smallest otter species in the world, but they’ve definitely got some of the biggest personalities at the zoo.

Happy World Turtle Day 🐢

Today we’re celebrating with our tortoises on snack time duty 🥬

Tortoises are part of the turtle family, but not all turtles are tortoises. Tortoises are land-dwellers built for slow, steady life on land, while turtles can live in water or both land and water environments.

A few simple ways to help protect them in the wild:
• Keep habitats clean and avoid litter, especially plastic
• Never release pets into the wild
• Support conservation programs that protect reptiles and their habitats like
• Respect wildlife from a distance if you ever see them outdoors

Ever wondered why marabou storks have such white legs? 👀🪶

Marabou storks actually keep cool by pooping on their own legs 💩☀️

This behavior is called urohidrosis, a natural cooling method that helps lower their body temperature in the heat. Strange? A little. Effective? Absolutely.

Saturday we celebrated World Binturong Day with Mushu & Luna enjoying goose eggs as a special treat🥚🐾

Binturongs, also known as “bearcats,” are skilled climbers that use their prehensile tails almost like an extra limb while moving through the trees. In the wild, they also help spread seeds throughout their forest habitats, making them very important to their ecosystems.

Visit them on your next adventure through the Wildlife Walk Through!
