To Akwesasne community members:
This is as close as it can be to Akwesasne. The Akwesasne Animal Society has been providing low-cost Rabies vaccines monthly for cats and dogs since October 2023. The reason they do it is for the protection of community pets and our community members. Rabies is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can spread from animals to humans. They have scheduled clinics for dog vaccines but if you are worried about this and your dog needs to be vaccinated please reach out to them. The vaccine they give does NOT treat rabies virus if your pet is already exposed, so please reach out to your county health department or animal control if you believe your pet has been exposed. Do NOT bring your dog to the vaccine clinic if you believe your pet has been exposed to a rabid animal; contact your local health agency or animal control.

RABID FOX FOUND IN THE TOWN OF BOMBAY, FRANKLIN COUNTY
A fox recently has been tested positive for rabies in the Town of Bombay, Franklin County, New York. This was confirmed by the Franklin County Public Health Department on September 10, 2025. This latest case of rabies is Franklin County’s second confirmed case of rabies in an animal this summer — a rabies positive bat was found earlier this summer in the town of Bellmont.

This serves as a reminder for Akwesasne and surrounding area residents to avoid contact with wild animals and to ensure their pets are vaccinated, as rabies is a fatal disease spread through the saliva or bite of an infected animal.

While foxes typically avoid contact with humans, they will attack if they feel threatened or cornered. This makes them particularly dangerous as they may seem friendly at first but can quickly turn aggressive. Additionally, foxes are known for roaming in packs, so if you encounter one fox, there is a good chance there are others nearby.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ENCOUNTER A RABID ANIMAL:
🐾 Do not approach or have contact with any stray or wild animals, especially those showing unusual behavior.
🚨 Alert the MCA Environment Program, Conservation Officer or the Compliance Officer: if you see a wild animal acting strangely, such as appearing aggressive, lethargic, or lost.
🗑️ Secure your trash cans: to avoid attracting wild animals to your property.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR YOUR PET HAVE BEEN EXPOSED:
⚠️ Wash the wound with soap and warm water for at least 15 minutes.
⚠️ Seek medical attention immediately for any bites or scratches from a wild or unfamiliar animal.
⚠️ If you’ve been bitten or scratched by a bat or other wild animal, do not attempt to catch the animal or provoke it. Contact a professional if the animal needs to be captured.
⚠️ Report the incident to MCA Community Health Services at 613-575-2341 ext. 3220 and ensure the appropriate follow-up care.
⚠️ Ensure your pets are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations, as this is the best way to protect them and your family.

Amazing!!! We need dogs in so many ways.

Replanting vast acres of forests seemed like an overwhelming task until three Border Collies stepped up to help. These dogs have been specially trained to run through damaged forests, wearing backpacks that release native plant seeds as they go. The goal is for these seeds to take root and help regenerate the destroyed areas 🐶

Border Collies are perfect for this job due to their speed, intelligence, endurance, and ability to stay focused, even when wildlife is present!
