This is crazy but completely possible... I warn people about this when handling all coral. Make sure to use proper safety equipment.

If you own a reef tank, you should read this 🚨 🪸

In March 2018, an Oxfordshire man named Chris Matthews decided to clean a piece of live coral rock from his home aquarium. He took it out of the tank and began rigorously scrubbing it clean under warm water.

The next morning, his entire family of six and their two dogs woke up violently ill, struggling to breathe and suffering severe eye damage!

When emergency services arrived, 4 firefighters were immediately hospitalized just by walking into the house 🚑

Chris had accidentally scrubbed a rock covered in Palythoa corals (often called Zoanthids). When disturbed, they release Palytoxin, one of the deadliest poisons in the natural world ☠️

The warm water and scrubbing had turned the venom into a deadly aerosol gas that filled the entire house!

Luckily, everyone survived, but it’s a terrifying reminder of what is lurking in our tanks.

Pretty incredible

While the Amazon appears lush, its soils are naturally depleted because heavy tropical rains constantly wash away essential minerals like phosphorus.

Luckily, 28 million tons of dust containing approximately 22 thousand tons of phosphorus from the Sahara settle in the Amazon basin annually, almost exactly the amount lost each year to flooding and runoff.

Beyond feeding the rainforest, Saharan dust also fertilizes the ocean's surface, providing iron that spurs the growth of phytoplankton.

The hot, dry air layer that carries the dust can even help suppress the formation of hurricanes by stabilizing the atmosphere.

The Sahara Desert may seem like a barren and lifeless place, but it helps bring life to other ecosystems as far as 5,000 miles away
