EMERGING HEALTH ALERT: The New World Screwworm Fly which was eradicated in the 1970's from the USA and Mexico has returned with 4 cases (3 cow and 1 dog) in Texas reported as of June 8 2026. This fly is an enormous health threat to all mammals especially livestock and wildlife because its larvae eat healthy tissue causing rapid wound deterioration and severe infection. Owners of horses, livestock (cattle, pigs, goats, sheep), and those feeding/managing stray cats and feral colonies especially be on the lookout. Rescue, shelter, and animal control workers also need to be aware. Those often in contact with wildlife as well.

Small update - new cases now reported in New Mexico, in a goat in Texas and possible case in another state (not confirmed).

ALL MAMMALS INCLUDING US CAN BE INFESTED!!! SIGNS:
(1) Non-healing wounds especially that rapidly worsen
(2) Suddenly sick/painful/lethargic animals
(3) Fly larvae around/in wounds, eyes, nose, mouth, a**s, genitalia, umbilicus/navels in newborns and mammary glands in nursing moms are areas to special attention to.

What to do:
(1) Collection of fly larvae into rubbing alcohol
(2) Confinement if possible of affected animal
(3) Contacting your local veterinarian, your state veterinarian, and/or the Georgia (or your state/s) department of agriculture is imperative. Better 100 false calls than one missed positive.

Suspected cases should be reported immediately to the Georgia Department of Agriculture's Animal Health Division at 404-656-3667 or [email protected].
