Alfalfa is higher in calories and protein than grass hay, but that doesnโ€™t mean it turns your horse into a fire-breathing dragon. If a horse gets antsy or wild after switching to alfalfa, odds are itโ€™s because:
โ€ข They were underfed before and now feel good
โ€ข The workload doesnโ€™t match the calories
โ€ข Theyโ€™re not being exercised consistently

Protein doesnโ€™t cause hyper behavior. Itโ€™s used for muscle repair and growth, not energy. And the extra calories? Thatโ€™s only an issue if your horse is sitting around doing nothing all week and then suddenly getting legged up.
