Shout out to our newest volunteers Robert and Ali! They have been helping out with feeding and watering at the farm. We think Miss Ali is making fast friends with Guinness and Cawood ♥️ Guin truly seems happy here, which is all we could ever ask for, for all of them.

We wanted to share some photos and information about a few of our youngsters from the 39 horses we assisted with in November. They have settled into their foster homes very well, and are learning to be good partners with their people. Everyone is coming along and learning new things. They are still under stray hold until 12/9. We will begin assessing and accepting adoption applications after that, so if you are interested, please let us know!

Happy Thanksgiving! We have a lot in this photo to be thankful for. Seen here is our new truck, purchased with assistance from Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels Good Works Program. The truck is pulling our UTV trailer, as well as hauling our water tank to the Appalachian Horse Center in Perry County that is now becoming a safe haven for many rescued feral horses.

We're working alongside our partners at the ASPCA, Kentucky Horse Council (KHC), and Kentucky Humane Society Equine CARE , to assist 39 at-risk horses who were previously collected from a reclaimed mine site in Eastern Kentucky from an individual who didn't have proper authorization from local authorities.

The 39 horses were returned and immediately vetted upon their arrival by Dr. Rocky Mason from Lexington Equine Medical Group, who graciously stepped up on short notice to provide all 39 horses with necessary health assessments. As you can imagine, this is an extremely large, unexpected intake case, and each horse will need months of rehabilitation, training and ongoing medical care before they are ready for new homes.

We're grateful to the ASPCA for providing emergency support, and to our many community partners who have stepped up to ensure these horses have a safe place to land. But we still need your help.

Providing a high level of care to this many horses isn't cheap or easy. It will take a large amount of work from our team, along with a significant amount of our resources to get these horses healthy and happy again. So, please consider donating today and together, we can make sure these horses experience the compassionate care and second chances they deserve.

We currently have 10 of these horses in foster homes, while they await their stray hold period to end.

Our volunteers having been putting in a lot of hours at the farm, getting it ready for the horses for the winter. Many of our supporters have been asking what our needs are. One of our immediate needs is a round bale feeder. This will help us feed more economically, as well as saving time as we care for the horses. If anyone has one sitting around that you aren’t using, we could take it off your hands. We really need two of them, as we are feeding in multiple pastures. Or, if you’d like to donate towards purchase of a couple new ones that would be great too!

The boys had their day at the vet. Getting ready to move on to forever homes! Our senior boys acted like perfect gentlemen. We are so happy for them! Knowing they will be safe and cared for, for the rest of their days is truly heartwarming.

In case anyone is unaware of where to find information about horses that have been removed, please refer to this website https://www.kyagr.com/statevet/strayhorse/

All horses removed by AHP have been posted on stray hold. If they remain unclaimed, we will assess them individually for potential adoption after stray hold expires.

😅 Wanted: A Home for Woody! 🐴

This little guy thought Cawood Park was his personal hangout spot… until he started trying to direct traffic on the road! 🚗➡️🐴

Meet Cawood (aka Woody) — the pony with big park ranger energy. Now he’s safe, and he’s looking for a forever home where his “job” can be eating grass, not blocking traffic. 🌱😂

We are searching for a gently used truck. Preferably 4 door, 4WD, with towing hitch. Please let us know if you have or know of anything available.

For years, the Appalachian Horse Project has offered real, workable solutions to help manage the free-roaming horse population in Breathitt County — always at no cost to the county or taxpayers.

Here’s what we’ve brought to the table:

Population Control
We previously gelded 32 stallions on the mountain. This had an immediate impact — until over two years ago, when our vet was told by the county animal control officer to stop. We remain ready and willing to restart this program at any time.

Birth Control for Mares
Working alongside committed partners, we became certified and licensed to administer PZP, a humane and reversible contraceptive. A single dose prevents pregnancy for a year. Had this been implemented last spring, it could have slowed the unchecked breeding significantly — again, at no cost.

Nuisance & Road Horses
We offered to safely dart and remove nuisance and road horses (including those feral or difficult to catch). This protects both the horses and drivers — completely free.

Between 2020 and 2024, AHP removed 139 horses from multiple counties. Of those, 92 were from Breathitt County — including 32 nuisance horses from roads and private property. That leaves only 60 that truly required removal for additional care over a 5 year period!

Horses in Need
We offered to remove and care for horses failing to thrive, getting them the extra resources they needed.

Since July 2023, AHP has not been allowed to pick up horses. However, in that time, we identified and reported 19 horses in 2023 and 14 in 2024 to Animal Control. Some were picked up by others — but they were reported because we continue to monitor and care.

These programs could have made a fast, meaningful difference for both the horses and our community’s safety. And yet… our offers have gone unanswered.
Why Won’t Breathitt County Accept Our Help for the Free-Roaming Horses?

We are still here. We remain committed to working together on real solutions for both the horses and the people of Breathitt County.
