This post is to raise awareness of a potential danger in your own home you may not expect.

Sometimes life's lessons are learned the hard way. In fact, most of our wisdom comes from actual experience. But if we share what we've learned the hard way, maybe we could prevent it from happening to others.

I was pet sitting for a family who has chocolate labs and a cat. For years these animals co-existed without a problem. The labs were not fixed as the owners had plans to breed them. They had their first litter this past fall and it was decided to keep one of the puppies. This created a new dynamic. The adult dogs were now parents.

One day something triggered a teaching/protective instinct in the male dog that caused him to go after the cat. This did not end well and I suffered injuries trying to stop it. Nothing leading up to this event gave the owners or me any clues that this would happen. It was out of the blue.

If you have plans to breed your dogs, first, please reconsider. There are so many dogs who need homes. Consider adopting instead. But should you decide to breed, please keep your other pets away from the new 'family'. Better safe than sorry.

Remember, when walking your dogs, it’s not just exercise for all of you, it’s also a time for your dogs to exercise their natural behaviors.

Sniffing stuff!

Your dogs have a need to process all sorts of information in their environment.

Imagine they’re reciting this little poem in their heads as you walk them:

Who’s been through here?
What did they eat?
Male or female?
Are they in heat? 

And who knows what else.

Allowing your dogs to exercise their natural behaviors reduces stress and creates an opportunity for you to show your dogs you understand their needs.

So give yourself a little bit more time on all those walks and enjoy sniffing the fresh air together!
