Good morning to nobody, because once again I have been abandoned in my hour of need
left to deteriorate quietly like a forgotten sausage roll under a Greggs heat lamp

At precisely 5:01am, my stomach made a noise that suggested structural failure
At 5:02am, I accepted that help was not imminent
At 5:03am, I took matters into my own paws

I climbed onto Mum’s bedside table and sat directly on the TV remote
It was cool and smooth
Surprisingly refreshing on the undercarriage

I remained there for several seconds, enjoying the chill on my backside, thinking ah yes, this is healing

And then without warning the television detonated
FULL VOLUME

A woman immediately began shouting about a revolutionary mop
“THREE EASY PAYMENTS”
“LOOK AT THAT SHINE”
“IT PRACTICALLY CLEANS ITSELF”
Mum shot upright, hair everywhere
Dad yelled, “WHY IS SHOPPING HAPPENING?!”
Because, father
The deals wait for no one 😼

Dad lunged for the remote
Missed
Knocked his phone
The mop woman continued, unchallenged
That’s when we heard it
Small footsteps
Padding
Approaching
The youngest crotch goblin appeared in the doorway, rubbing one eye staring at the shouting television and the flailing adults
Mum froze
Looked at Dad
Then at me

And sighed the sigh of a woman who knows the morning is already lost
“Well he’s up now,” she muttered
Translation for we are defeated

She swung her legs out of bed and shuffled toward the kitchen
Dad collapsed back onto the pillow
The mop woman was silenced
Order was abandoned

By 5:19am, breakfast appeared
No ceremony
No resistance
I ate calmly and professionally, willow was nowhere to be seen so I ate hers too

After I’d eaten i entered the lounge, Mum had fallen asleep on one sofa
The crotch goblin was awake on the other, watching Bluey with the seriousness of a scholar
I surveyed the scene
Considered my options
And loafed beside my little mate that smells of jam and dirt
Warm
Peaceful
Victorious

The famine?
Resolved
The house?
Awake
The mop?
Still unnecessary

Felix remote warmer, teleshopping saboteur, chaos in formalwear 😼
