Great time at Elk Creek! Thanks to Lisa Singer and her fabulous crew for a wonderful event. I drove Amanda Drapers young Morgan mare, June, at her first “away from home” event, and this mare was just lovely showing her potential! It’s always a privilege to drive a young horse at its first event. Damara Gailliot finished 1st at Intermediate Pony with Nick! Tim Palloni finished 2nd his first time out at Intermediate Horse having a great go. Ann Spurgas had a really strong event improving her skills at Preliminary Horse and Rhonda Gould finished 3rd at Training pony with her super Haflinger. Many thanks to all the great people that work so hard to make this event so special!
Congratulations to Martha Duchnowski on a great show with her boys. Lots of hard work paid off!

At Saturday’s derby Thunder, owned by Linda Kalman, showed such improvement in obstacles. He is much more relaxed and ratable. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with him. 😊
Some great observations from my dear friend Dana Bright on dressage fundamentals as the basis for all training. System : a set of principles or procedures, an organized scheme or method. A group of related things that work towards a common goal. For driving, we want to end up with a trained animal that we can enjoy driving. We want to feel in control as we drive, and able to handle what comes our way. Once trained, we'd like this animal to be our partner for as long as possible. A system puts facts in order. Training:Experienced people have already thought about and tested a system for lasting results in teaching a horse how to do its driving job well in partnership with the driver. Training a driving horse goes deeper than teaching it to respond to rudimentary aids of turn left, turn right, stop, go. You are your horse's personal trainer. You need to consider the same things a personal trainer at a gym does. You are doing gymnastics, posture control, ballet and conditioning. There are good postures and less effective postures for an animal to perform in. This is based on anatomy and function, not aesthetic fads. The horse should understand how to use its body in response to the driver's aids. He feels no anxiety in going about his job, so he can be an active participant. This system is based on horse's anatomy, behavior and thought process. It follows certain steps, basic steps becoming more refined. You knew this was coming. . . . A system based on dressage fundamentals is the most effective in creating this partnership. For one thing, you don't need to reinvent it. Also, anyone familiar with driving on contact will be able to drive your horse, ensuring him a safe future if you ever need to find him a new home. So, how do you know what the goal feels like if you've never driven a schooled horse? As you learn, the goal posts will keep moving. How does a well trained horse look and FEEL?
Dressage is your friend. It’s not just a test in front of a judge. It’s the training that takes your horse through his career. Written by my dear friend, Dana Bright: Post by moderators Dana Bright and Paula Bliss: It can seem overwhelming for a beginner to organize the knowledge they need to progress in a given task. For this page, the task is learning to drive your animal to a carriage. To complicate things more, often the animal you want to drive is also a green bean. How do you learn together? Is that a good idea? Seemingly random facts are tossed about, further confusing the issue. System : a set of principles or procedures, an organized scheme or method.
