IT'S JAEGER! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿฅณ

I was so happy to see this sweet boy over the weekend for some drop-in visits! Jaeger has been a regular with me for nearly 3 years now, and I always look forward to spending time with him.

This visit was extra special because it had been a little while since our last one. The result? An extra wiggly, extra happy greeting that absolutely made my day! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Everyone give Jaeger some love! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿพ

Everyone say hello to Barney & Scout! ๐Ÿพ

Both boys can be a little sensitive when it comes to meeting new people and welcoming them into their space. Luckily, Barney and Scout have incredible parents who go the extra mile to ensure they have someone they feel comfortable with caring for them when needed.

Over the last few weeks, I've been doing short meet-and-greet visits to help Barney and Scout get used to seeing me and to make sure everyone felt comfortable with our routine for coming and going for bathroom breaks and care visits.

This past weekend, I completed my first official drop-ins with them, and both boys did an amazing job! All of our preparation and patience really paid off, and I couldn't be prouder of how well they handled everything.

I'm so excited to officially welcome Barney & Scout to the Smith River Pet Care family! ๐Ÿฅณโค๏ธ

This week, Zamboni and I took a break from our public outings during Thursday's stormy weather and switched things up with a fun indoor "Find It" game!

This activity gave Zamboni a chance to show off her impressive impulse control skills. She did an amazing job waiting patiently while I hid treats in another room. Once she heard her release cue, "Okay!", she eagerly got to work tracking down every hidden treat.

It was a great way to keep both her mind and body active while staying indoors, and she absolutely rose to the challenge. Way to go, Zamboni! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿพ

Today, I spent some time with Roscoe, who you may recognize from my group obedience classes! Roscoe is such a smart boy and has come so far since I first met him.

His dad reached out for a little extra help with his Stay, as he'd been struggling with it recently. With a few adjustments and some practice, Roscoe quickly got back on track during our session today. It was great to see him working so hard and showing off just how much he knows!

Everyone give a big round of applause to our smart, handsome boy, Roscoe! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

Warning: Long post ๐Ÿ˜… but it is worth the read!

Recently, Iโ€™ve had the honor of working with some amazing families and their newly adopted dogs. Helping dogs transition from shelter life into their forever homes is something that is incredibly close to my heart.

Before shifting my focus to training, I spent more than 10 years working in animal welfare, helping shelter pets find loving homes. Because of that experience, I understand both the excitement and the challenges that come with welcoming a rescue dog into your family. Whether I was helping match families with their new companion or bringing home rescue pets of my own, I saw firsthand how much change a new adoption can bringโ€”not just for the dog, but for the humans and established pets in the home as well.

I rescued Abu (pictured below) in 2019 when he was estimated to be between 6 and 8 years old. Before arriving at my shelter, he had spent time fending for himself on the streets of Puerto Rico before being transported north.

Abu came with a lot of behavioral baggage. He struggled with resource guarding, had severe anxiety during storms, and was reactive toward other dogs. The transition into his new home was far from seamless, and there were plenty of challenges as we worked together to help him feel safe and learn new ways to navigate the world. It took time, patience, and a lot of training, but every step forward was worth it.

I was lucky enough to share just over six years with Abu before losing him to cancer last August. Watching him transform into the dog he became later in life was nothing short of incredible. When I first brought him home, I never would have imagined that one day he would share a home with two other dogs and four cats. He even discovered the joy of play and formed a special friendship with his best buddy, Syd. Abu's journey reminds me every day that rescue dogs are capable of incredible growth when they are given patience, understanding, and support.

Many rescue dogs come from difficult or uncertain backgrounds. They may have been strays, owner surrenders, or transports from shelters in other states. By the time they arrive in their new home, they have already experienced several major life changes. They are learning to navigate a new environment, new relationships, new routines, and sometimes new animal companionsโ€”all while carrying the experiences that have shaped how they view and respond to the world around them.

My background in animal welfare, combined with my personal experience living with and training rescue dogs, gives me a unique perspective when working with newly adopted dogs and their families. Iโ€™ve found that helping pet parents better understand where their dog is coming from and how those past experiences may influence their behavior allows us to create realistic expectations and effective plans for success. Together, we can build a smoother transition and stronger bond between dog and family.

About 50% of the challenge of rescue is finding someone willing to open their home and heart to a pet in need. The other 50% is ensuring that families have the knowledge, support, and resources necessary to help that pet thrive long after they leave the shelter.

Watching these dogs settle into their new lives and seeing families grow alongside them is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. ๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŽ“ Congratulations to this round's Group Obedience Class graduates! ๐ŸŽ“

I want to give a huge round of applause to everyone who participated over the last five weeks. Both pups and handlers worked incredibly hard, and it was so rewarding to watch each team grow in confidence and skill throughout the course.

To celebrate graduation, each class completed an obstacle course that incorporated the skills they learned during class. It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to showcase their hard work and see just how far theyโ€™ve come since day one!

If you'd like to join in on the fun, registration is now open for our next round of classes beginning Sunday, June 28th and running through Sunday, August 2nd. We offer several class options to accommodate dogs of all ages, experience levels, and training goals.

Group classes are a great way to strengthen your bond with your dog, build real-world training skills, and meet other local dog owners along the way!

๐Ÿ“ธ Be sure to check out the graduation photos below and help me celebrate these amazing teams and all of their accomplishments!

Registration is available now: https://ttccrec.org/special_programs/dog-obedience-classes/

As always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the classes or which level would be the best fit for your dog!

Found safe! Our team members Nader and Rick immediately went to the area to set up. Since Luna was dragging a leash they decided to walk with the owners and heard Luna in the bushes. They were able to safely get her out and to safety. Great job by all!

This week was BUSY, and I loved every second of it!

With the heat making things challenging, I made sure every pet's comfort, safety, and well-being remained the top priority during walks, training sessions, and visits. Despite the high temperatures, all of my furry clients did an amazing job navigating the week.

I am incredibly grateful to every pet parent who trusts me with the care and training of their beloved family members. Your support means more to me than I can ever fully express. I truly love what I do, and getting to spend my days helping pets and their people is something I never take for granted.

Just four short months ago, I made the leap to running Smith River Pet Care full-time. I never could have imagined that my weeks would already look like this one. Thank you to everyone who has supported my business, recommended my services, and trusted me with your pets. None of this would be possible without you! ๐Ÿ’›

Here's to another busy week filled with happy pets!

Everyone say hello to Betty! ๐Ÿ’›

Sweet Betty is a sensitive girl who needs a little extra help navigating appropriate interactions with her family members. Luckily, she has an amazing family that reached out for support!

Betty can be nervous about the world around her, but she is deeply attached to her family. Sometimes that attachment leads to her becoming a little too excited during greetings and interactions. Together, we're working on building Betty's confidence, helping her feel more comfortable in her environment, and teaching her calmer, more appropriate ways to communicate with her family.

I am so happy to be part of Betty's journey and can't wait to watch her confidence, skills, and relationships continue to blossom as we work together! ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿพ
