Sweet little Ms Sunshine, you are our last available puppy, and we’re sure tempted... Today you had a wonderful time outside, rain and shine. You moved purposefully through the yard, and tried your best to learn everything you can from your Dad!

Pinky, you are almost eight weeks old! Tonight you begged to stay outside as long as at all possible, not bothered by the cooling temperatures. You discovered parts of our duck blind, and LOVED those smells. We even got a little walk in, and you remembered how to walk along :)

Good Morning Mister Gray. You’re almost eight weeks old today. You’re growing into a laid back but attentive young dog, and your eyes melt hearts! P.S.: Why didn’t you tell me you had a muddy nose?

Getting ready for a puppy: There are many resources and philosophies on how to raise a pup. Find one that resonates with you, ideally it takes into account the individual personality of your dog. Then do your best to follow it.

We appreciate Julie Knutson’s book “Training the Pointing Labrador”(audio link below). Pointing, or not, she covers the early stages including these recommendations:

1. Picture the grown dog and what behaviors you do and do not want to build. Then act accordingly. For example: If you don’t want a jumper, don’t allow your adorable puppy to climb or jump up your legs. Or, if you don’t want a leash-puller avoid expandable leashes. If you don’t wamt separation anxiety, provide some daily time of solitude. These puppies are like sponges, and this is the golden moment to easily teach them everything. Remember you are always teaching them something, intentionally or not.
2. The daily walk. Julie also recommends a short daily 1:1 walk. No distractions or other people/dogs. Find a safe natural area. Observe your pup. Teach it to walk next to you (180 turns if not). Only use your voice to actively direct the pup, otherwise your voice may turn into background noise.
