For an 8-week-old Golden Retriever puppy, a 36-inch crate with a divider panel is usually the best choice. You can get the small one and get the bigger one later as a second option. Some families only use a crate for first few months.
Why:
Golden Retrievers grow quickly, often reaching 65 - 75+ pounds as adults.
A 36-inch crate is large enough to accommodate growth for several months.
The divider lets you reduce the usable space so your puppy has just enough room to:
Stand up comfortably
Turn around
Lie down stretched out
If the crate is too large, puppies are more likely to use one end as a bathroom and sleep in the other, which can slow house training.
Typical sizing:
8 weeks to ~4 months: Divider set to create a smaller area or use a smaller crate.
4–8 months: Gradually move the divider back as the puppy grows.
Adult Golden Retriever: Most adults end up needing a 42-inch crate.
Here : The puppies were moved out of the whelping box at 4 weeks of age and into a playpen that included a small crate with the door left open, allowing them to freely go in and out. This helped them learn that the crate is a comfortable, safe place to rest and sleep. They also had access to a 36-inch crate with a divider.
As a result, the puppies are very comfortable with crates and do not view them with fear. They willingly enter and rest in them, making the transition to crate training much easier.

Sunshine and puppy paws 🐾- The little fluff balls are loving their outdoor playground adventures! I love watching them play. ❤️
This week : Puppy Culture week 7–8 is always such a special (and busy!) stage around here 🐾
Right now we’re focusing on building confident, happy, resilient puppies through positive new experiences, socialization, and handling practice, crate introduction, early training, and lots of gentle exposure to everyday life indoor/outdoors. They are meeting lots of people last weekend and this weekend ❤️
They’re learning about new sounds, surfaces, people, routines, and how to recover confidently from little surprises. We’re also working on recall, calm behavior, problem-solving, and learning that the world is a safe and exciting place to explore.
So much love, time, and intention goes into these early weeks, and it’s incredibly rewarding watching their little personalities every day ❤️
