A batch of mosquitoes collected from Kankakee has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). This is the first positive test for WNV in Kankakee County this year.

With WNV active in Kankakee County, remember the 3 R’s:

Reduce exposure
Repel mosquitos
Report standing water

‼️Bats can carry and spread rabies without appearing ill. PLEASE keep your pets, including indoor cats, current on their rabies vaccines and if you do find a bat in a building, always call Animal Control!!

🚨 Rabies Alert in Dwight 🚨

We’ve been notified that a bat in the Dwight area has tested positive for rabies. While this may sound alarming, it’s an important reminder to stay vigilant and ensure your pets are protected.

🦇 What does this mean for your pets?
Rabies is a deadly virus that can affect both cats and dogs — and is 100% preventable with up-to-date vaccinations. Curious, unvaccinated pets are especially at risk if they encounter infected wildlife like bats, raccoons, or skunks. Indoor only pets too!

✅ If your pet’s rabies vaccine is overdue or you’re unsure of their vaccination status, give us a call at 815-584-2732. We’re here to help keep them safe.

📍 Found a bat (especially if dead or acting strangely)?
Do not touch it — even with gloves. Instead, contact your local health department or animal control immediately for safe handling and guidance.

Let’s work together to keep our community — and our pets — safe and healthy. 🐾
