Let’s take a minute and talk about kindness. It’s one of our core values here at Foxy Hound Grooming - and having it in doodles… errr, oodles 😂 is pretty much a requirement to work in our salon.
Kindness to each other. Kindness to ourselves. And most importantly, kindness to the furry family members that walk through our doors.
Today we wanted to give you a little look behind the curtain into what we sometimes see as groomers, and why we encourage regular grooming schedules for breeds like doodles.
This sweet pup came in looking adorable with that lovable ragamuffin doodle look… but underneath was severe matting hidden close to the skin. What many people don’t realize is that matting is more than just tangled hair - it pulls tightly on the skin with every movement, causing constant discomfort and irritation.
Imagine wearing clothing that pinched and pulled every time you moved. Even loving pets and snuggles can become uncomfortable when the coat underneath is severely matted.
We know not everyone sees what we see beneath the fluff, and we truly understand that life gets busy ( no shade to any of you owners- we all have “stuff”). Coat maintenance for doodles can be overwhelming, especially because matting often sneaks up faster than people expect.
This is also why we strongly encourage pre-booking appointments and keeping pups on a grooming schedule that matches their specific coat type. For most doodles, that means appointments no later than every 10 weeks - and often sooner depending on coat texture, lifestyle, and home maintenance. Staying on a consistent schedule helps prevent painful matting before it starts and keeps your pup comfortable year-round.
That’s why we don’t see grooming as “just a haircut.” We see it as partnering with you in your pup’s comfort, health, and overall wellbeing.
Sometimes the kindest thing we can do for a severely matted dog is to start fresh with a shorter groom so their skin and coat can reset comfortably. And from there, we work together to create a maintenance plan that keeps them feeling their very best.
