Are you afraid to cut your dog’s nails?

You’re not alone. And honestly, you don’t have to be a professional groomer to do a little nail maintenance at home. ❤️

Here’s the trick: don’t try to do it all at once especially at first.

If you’re nervous about hitting the quick, start by taking just the very tips off the nail. Even a tiny trim is progress.

Then wait a few days and do it again.

Those small trims accomplish two things: they help your dog get comfortable with having their feet handled, and over time, the quick can gradually recede, allowing you to safely take a little more off.

A few tips:

🐾 Use sharp, properly sized nail clippers.
🐾 Take small pieces rather than one big cut.
🐾 With dark nails, look at the cut surface after each trim. As you get closer to the quick, you’ll see the center change. That’s your cue to stop.
🐾 If your dog gets stressed, quit while you’re ahead. One or two nails done calmly is better than turning it into a wrestling match.
🐾 As seen in the video- don’t be afraid to partner up to create a diversion:)

And here’s something we tell our clients all the time:

You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be consistent.

Even trimming those little tips is helping.

So if you’ve been afraid to try, grab the clippers, take a tiny bit off, give your pup a treat, and call it a win. ❤️

And if you’re still not comfortable doing it yourself, that’s what we’re here for. 😉

❤️ We can’t definitively say our girls are the best groomers in the world… but they’re pretty stinking good. 🐾

Because a great groom takes more than skill with scissors.

It takes the science of creating a beautiful groom and the art of loving each dog through their own unique personality, needs, and challenges.

It’s the belly rubs and treats. The patience and reassurance. The little wins in trust. And even having grace when the humans who love them get it wrong sometimes, too. ❤️

That combination of skill, heart, and understanding is what we call artistry.

I am incredibly blessed to have Brena Lock, Madison Line, and Mandilin Ramsey-Dolsen, on our team led by the heartbeat of our space, Leah Nord. You girls are true artists, and we’re so grateful for the love you pour into every pup and every family we’re privileged to serve.

And to our Foxy Fam and community - thank you for trusting us with someone who means so much to you.

We don’t just want your pup to look amazing when they leave. We want them to feel the love that went into making them look amazing.

That’s what we believe a groom can be. 🐶❤️

Foxy Fam, give a shoutout to the groomer who loves on your pup! 👇

Maybe we’re not running out of patience. Maybe we’re running out of understanding. ❤️

When we take the time to understand why a dog is nervous, overwhelmed, or unsure, our response changes.

Instead of asking, “Why won’t you cooperate?” we start asking, “What are you trying to tell me?”

People are no different.

Sometimes what looks like anger is hurt.
What looks like stubbornness is fear.
What looks like indifference is someone struggling to communicate.

Understanding gives us context. And context gives us patience.

That’s why we take the time to understand each pup at Foxy Hound, so we can be patient in the ways that are actually meaningful to them.

Maybe we could all use a little more of that with each other, too.

Understand first. Respond second. 🐾

Sometimes taking care of your people means doing a little something extra. ❤️

Two young Wild fans brought their pup in, so we had a little fun and turned their buddy into a couple of hockey cards. 🏒🐾

Nothing complicated. Just a couple smiles.

We love taking care of the pups, but we love taking care of their people too.

If making people smile matters to you too, you’re our kind of people.

And if you know someone who feels the same way, share Foxy Hound with your people. We’d love to meet them. ❤️

Ok Y’all Foxy Dog school is in session🤣

🐾 Nail Trim vs. Nail Filing (Grinding): What’s the Difference?

Many pet parents don’t realize that a nail trim and a nail file (also called grinding) are two different steps—and together, they can make a big difference in your dog’s comfort and long-term nail health.

✂️ A nail trim removes the length of the nail using clippers.

💅 A nail file (grinding) gently smooths and shapes the nail using a rotary tool, leaving a rounded, more natural finish.

So why would we recommend nail filing?

🐾 Smoother nails – Filing removes the sharp edges left behind by clippers, which means fewer scratches on your skin, furniture, hardwood floors, and little ones.

🐾 Greater comfort – A rounded nail is more comfortable for your dog and less likely to catch on blankets, carpet, or other surfaces. It’s also less likely to split which can be incredibly painful
for your pup.

🐾 Long-term nail health – With regular nail maintenance, the quick (the sensitive blood vessel inside the nail) can gradually recede over time. That allows us to safely maintain shorter, healthier nails with each visit.

🐾 Less stress for everyone – For dogs who are nervous about nail care, frequent, positive nail maintenance often makes each visit quicker and more comfortable than waiting until the nails become overgrown.

If you’ve ever wondered whether nail filing would benefit your dog, we’d love to show you the difference at your next visit! 🐶❤️

We talk a lot about kindness being at the core of how Leah and I live our lives and do business at Foxy Hound Grooming. But we know we’re not the only ones living it. ❤️

There are people all around us quietly making their corner of the world a little better.

Maybe it’s someone who always shows up for their neighbors. Someone who gives second chances. Someone who cares for kids, animals, seniors or people going through a difficult time.

Or maybe it’s simply someone who has a way of making people feel seen.

We’d love your help finding them.

Tell us who they are and, more importantly, why you think they deserve to be recognized.

Let’s give some of the good people in our community a little recognition. ❤️

Kindness First.😎
All the love to our Foxy fam❤️
